MONTREAL— From Saturday's Globe and Mail

When Canadians look at their American neighbours, they no longer gaze with envy at a powerful greenback, a low unemployment rate or deep pools of capital sloshing around an entrepreneurial paradise.

Canadians now look south with something closer to pity.

A poll conducted for The Globe and Mail by Nanos Research on attitudes toward the United States reveals that Canadians see an economy in tatters, a paralyzed political system and a volatile American Dream trumped by a stable Canadian version.

1. I'm glad they take pity on us. Only way I'd get my meds.

4. It's my dream that the North East will secede and join up with Canada
That would make my town the West Palm Beach of CanAmerica. Getting health care and becoming a destination at the same time!

3. Lmao...when was there ever envy?
I have both relatives and friends in Canada...I have only ever heard pity, sadness, bewilderment, confusion, and even amusement...

Americans think everyone wants to be one.

I have friends in several countries and no, nobody really does.

5. Some Canadians used to have an inferiority complex, not envy.
But they don't have that anymore.

6. None that I know ever felt inferior. I never heard any envy either. Just good-neighbourly
relations.

9. Some folks from Edmonton told me that.
I didn't come up with that on my own. But I envy Canadians.

11. Folks in Edmonton can be weird though (j/k!) .......... I lived there for a long time.
It was a pretty good city with a lot to do. Ok, I figured it out - they lost Gretzky! That pissed me off too.

12. LOL. Well they did make it to the Stanley Cup Finals again in 2006.
It was at those finals after game 7 in the parking lot of the RBC Center we had the conversation I mentioned.

7. There is a handful of DUers who get so bent out of shape
over articles like this. I wonder how long it will take for them to get here?
