Is there a more insipid song? Hated it when it came out in the 80s, hate it now.

8. It always reminds me of something Bill Hicks said
Saying that you're proud to be an American is basically saying that you're proud that your parents fucked in the United States.

12. I agree with you about hurling. Hate the song.
In 2004, my hubby and I went to Silver Springs, FL for a concert for veterans of all branches of the service. Lee Greenwood was one of the performers. Hubby was a Marine. The first part of the concert was wonderful until Lee Greenwood came on stage. Of course he sang his one hit and from there everything went downhill. This was spring of 2004 and it turned into a damn repuke rally for gwb and Mel Martinez, who was running for senator from FL. We left the concert early and when I came home I wrote a letter to Greenwood and to the mgt of Silver Springs. I told them that I bought a tkt for a concert, not a political rally. Haven't been back there since and whenever I hear Proud to be an American, I can't turn it off fast enough. While bush was in office, I was certainly not a proud American.

24. Guess back then the divide didn't make me look at a singer's political religion as it does now
I did find the song patriotic then but don't like it's use now - most people seemed to genuinely like the song and our country then - now it is divided so hard there is no chance of compromise because we don't want their crap and they don't think and are brainwashed

18. The problem is that it's the only contemporary patriotic standard
It's like how you can't go anywhere during the holidays without hearing Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is You". When that song, there hadn't been a new holiday standard in decades and there hasn't been one since. Same with Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". If somebody comes out with a new patriotic standard, you'll hear less of that god awful song.

19. I like that song. Especially when you are station at a military base
overseas and celebrating an american holiday and everyone gets up standing clapping, missing home and proud to be an american. Nothing wrong with that tune. However, I had to say when republicans play it they act like they are the only ones that have the pride. they aren't.
