that he used to be a smoker and that the events of 9/11 caused him to start again.

4. I remember seeing his announcement, but I honestly don't remember that, really sad. |
|
I would bet money starting again triggered the cancer. :(

5. A smoker will use any excuse |
|
That is all. That is ALL. By god, that is ALL. One only needs an excuse.

13. I took the point of this thread to be that stress rules a smoker |
|
Stress is an excuse every smoker uses.

14. I am a smoker as well...the point was not about excuses |
|
the point was that we lost a great and trusted news anchor

3. I always said if the world blows up I want to hear about it from Peter Jennings. |
|
On 9/11 I took a cab home from work with a raging migraine. I was puking and lying on the couch with an ice pack. I turned on the television to ABC and I had my Peter Jennings. There was nobody else whose live commentary I wanted.
If something else happened there is no other commentator I trust as much or whose reactions I would care to hear. There are no more like him.

16. I keep telling myself that when I think it might be okay |
|
to have "just one."
Just one means a whole pack, and starting the whole process over again. I do not need to do that. I do not need lung cancer, either.

17. with the mention of Aaron Brown earlier, when news of Jennings Cancer came out |
|
Aaron Brown said some really nice words. i think he really admired Jennings.
i miss seeing both of these guys. i didn't agree with them on everything and there are things i would criticize them on. but there was something about the way both reported the news that i liked.

18. Ditto... I think Jennings may have mentored Brown a bit... |
|
Peter Jennings was one of the few men I'd ever refer to as elegant. He really was in a very professional kind of way. His voice was just made for a news anchor. I can still hear it in my mind.

19. Jennings also didn't graduate high school did he ? |
|
but he had a real passion for what he did and you could tell. just like Cronkite and others we don't see too much of these days. now it's mostly people who just want to hear themselves rather than people who care about the stories and telling the audience about them. the focus being on the story rather than themselves.
i would have loved to hear Jennings report on the events that happened after he died. things like Obama becoming President. the revolutions taking place in the middle east. natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti, Japan etc.

24. Oh, yes... so would I |
|
(love to have heard Jennings report on those more current, big events)....
And yes, there is a big difference between having a passion for journalism and thus the drive to excel, versus just a ego driven desire to be on tv and become a celebrity. Sadly, we have all to much of the latter now.

gathering around the campfire, trying to make some sense of an awful thing.

23. Being a former smoker |
|
of itself might have killed him, not his renewed habit. Or, maybe just DNA, or karma. C'mon, people, don't blame the guy for his illness. Isn't it enough that he died? We lost a good man, there.
