After JFK was assassinated, columnist Mary McGrory told Daniel Patrick Moynihan that she felt like we'd never laugh again (to which Moynihan replied, we'll laugh again, it's just that we'll never be young again).
I believe that this quote can apply to people at different times. I don't think I ever felt young again after Bobby died. 9/11 is another of these moments that can make you feel like laughter has permanently died.
These types of moments don't have to be huge events blasted all over the news. Many of them can be more personal, but just as heart rending. I'm sure most of you have had such a moment.
I have always had the notion that after the heart breaks there are a few things that may occur. The cracks can remain open and be closed over which will leave a permanent empty spot. They can be filled with feelings of hate and other negative emotions which will harden over time. The third thing I think that can happen is that as time passes, the spaces can be filled with memories and love that can hold the pieces together and somewhat soften life. The heart will always be broken, but it will never be gone.
Just pondering .......
