23. Wanting a repeat of the 1994 elections? |
|
from Wiki:
The NRA had a great night. They beat both Speaker Tom Foley and Jack Brooks, two of the ablest members of Congress, who had warned me this would happen. Foley was the first Speaker to be defeated in more than a century. Jack Brooks had supported the NRA for years and had led the fight against the assault weapons ban in the House, but as chairman of the Judiciary Committee he had voted for the overall crime bill even after the ban was put into it. The NRA was an unforgiving master: one strike and you're out. The gun lobby claimed to have defeated nineteen of the twenty-four members on its hit list. They did at least that much damage and could rightly claim to have made Gingrich the House Speaker.

22. Responsible gun owners support reasonable gun control laws. |
|
Gun owners that don't are neither reasonable nor responsible, just like the NRA and the gun lobby (or as Bill Maher more accurately calls it: the assassins lobby).

But to be honest, it does work to a degree...
These cartoons are incredibly persuasive to those who already agreed with them.

Being a reasonable, responsible gun owner, I'm open to ideas. What are some examples of reasonable gun control laws not currently on the books?

38. I do support reasonable gun control laws. |
|
The National Firearms Act, the Gun Control Act, the armor-piercing bullet ban of 1986, the ban on X-ray-undetectable handguns, etc. are mostly reasonable, as are most state-level restrictions on the use of force in self-defense.
The "assault weapon" fraud and mandating pre-1870's capacity limits do not fall into the "reasonable" category, IMO.

27. They do give one pause |

At the risk of having this moved to the Gungeon, I have to say, as a responsible gun owner, that I am disgusted with the current worship of firearms and use of guns as political statement.
But I never advocated control myself because of history: they took all guns away from Native Americans in order to kill them off. So I have always abhored the thought of gov't controlling the ownership of guns.
The other aspect of this is that without guns, crazy people still kill people. In areas where there is strict gun control, people just turn to making bombs that can kill many more than one gunman can kill.
but having stewed over this a few days, I believe we have reached the point where so many people are armed, I just feel more comfy knowing those on our side have access to the same stuff as those on the other side. Fatalistic, sure, but if they declare open war on liberals, some of us do need to be armed to the teeth. Not sitting in rooms full of weapons, mind, but having enough to defend themselves adequately. (I know, i know, I'm a terrible liberal.)
That fact alone should make the Teabaggers think twice before starting any civil war. Sad that it's come to this point though. When i see these people with huge arsenals, I just think they're absolute losers. And all of them I've seen, to be fair, are anti-gubmint, rightwingers.
Still, Gun worshippers make me absolutely sick to my stomach.

To allow people who want guns to have them, but to keep people who would use them to harm others from having them.

Specifically what "strict, common sense" gun control measures would you like passed in addition to the current regulations?
