Maybe you DUers can help me out a little bit, b/c I'm not too bright:
So today, having returned home from seeing an emergency patient and I with a terrible cold (teddible code), I sat down to watch some football (Eagles who I marginally can't stand b/c of Vick the dog-killer) and baseball (Phillies). After all the huge flags and ceremony the games began and then I saw it for the fortieth time, and I don't get it - or rather, I don't know what's become of the 'younger' generation...

So it's a beer ad - and this rather dorky looking guy is on the phone with his (naturally) gorgeous girlfriend, and he tells her that he can't see her b/c he's studying for the "bar exam". So he in fact is in a bar, by himself, and he and the bartender are discussing the coldness of the beer and the labels to that effect and whatnot. At that point, two gorgeous young ladies again ask him if he's in law school, and he says "No" in a really denigrating fashion as though "how dare they even deign to speak with him", and he runs away.

So therefore, I must conclude that a young 'gentleman' would rather drink a piss-thin beer like Coors, by himself, than spend time either with his gf, or TWO bee-yoo-tee-ful young ladies. And believe me, he's no beauty himself. I find it strange that a commercial which is extraordinarily carefully crafted, implies that beer drinking takes precedence over possibly 'hooking up' as they now say, with pretty women who seem interested in one. Further, it is not the first ad of its type: I recall the ad where the guy won't go upstairs to see his wife/gf's new nightgown, or the satin sheets on the bed, but he will run up to get a beer and slide across the satin sheets out the window.

Yes, I know I'm talking about the ad and the beer, and yes I know that I'm not in the target market, but I'll tell you one thing: I was NEVER in the target market that they're promoting their beer towards.

So what do you think? Am I just way behind the times?

2. You're not behind the times, they are abysmal ads. I'm
embarassed to be posting to a Phillies(best team in baseball)fan because of the way The Sox have been playing.

3. Um. Hard to say.
Sounds like a silly unrealistic commercial. And it isn't the first one you'll see. :)

Our parents were convinced we were a hopeless generation who would screw up the planet.

Oops. Maybe they were right.

And I was all ready with this intelligent comment about our younger generation . . .

5. Recognizing & sharing membership in the beer-drinking-is-everything group is more fun
and hipper than less satisfying, more emotionally risky, socially stressful behaviors with the opposite sex.

6. I haven't seen the ad, but I have seen some with similar themes.

And at the risk of being accused of hypersensitivity, I think it is a general trend of degrading women--portraying them as mere playthings, which the "serious" man can take or leave. They are "fine" in "their place," but only at the man's whim and convenience. Machismo, misogynistic bullshit aimed at the disgruntled white male who feels the world & their sense of privilege in that world is being lost--i.e., young Rethuglicans.

To take the comparison to its current affairs conclusion, look at how quickly the female teabagger candidates are tossed aside (Bachmann, Palin) when the more macho (perceived) Perry steps to the plate. Bachmann and Palin were mere playthings and thus dispensable....

My impression. You are free to agree or disagree, but it is a trend I have been seeing.

14. That's got to be the target audience
My ex would walk 4 miles for booze but not 4 steps for anything else, and that is a literal fact.

I think the ad is meant to be a joke. Well, ha-ha, the last thing it makes me want to do is drink the carbonated cat piddle commercial brewers are trying to pass off as lager.

10. Silver bullets are a gateway beer marketed to the young
All the mountain spring water in Colorado cannot fix the taste of a beer made with rice and corn starch as major ingredients.

31. Gateway to drinking watered-down beer, you mean
Take my freeper brother. (Please, please, please...) Ask him what his favorite beers are and you get this long, long list of slop like Budweiser, Coors, Miller Lite and so on. Name something reasonably decent, like Samuel Adams or any microbrew, and he'll tell you how awful they are. I think a Guinness would kill him. (And if the fucker won't quit quoting "Get Fuzzy" strips, he's going to find a case of Guinness sitting on his doorstep...)

Drink enough Coors, and you won't be able to drink anything else.

11. I think the marketing execs at corporations with ads like these rely on their ad agencies
to tell them what's hip. The corporate execs are middle aged. Ad copywriters are young doodz, who sell sell sell the client on their hip, trés ironic concepts that they assure the execs will appeal to their target demographic. The execs think What the hell do we know so they buy it.

And, after all, the Seth Rogans and Judd Apatows rule Hollywood right now, with the schlumpy guys and their eye candy girlfriends. It's not believable but it's a nice flattering fantasy, innit?

That help? :)

I think: WTF? Since when do we need visual cues as to how cold a can of beer is? I mean, fucking TOUCH it and find out.

That's what I think.

"There's an app for that!"

You'll hold your smart phone next to a can of beer to take it's temperature.

Just watch.

26. When I was a kid,
the old-timers would talk about walking to school, knee deep in snow and uphill both ways. In a few years, the story old-timers will tell is how they used to TOUCH their beer to tell if it were cold. That story probably won't be believed either.

19. I think the ad is supposed to make us losers feel good
We don't have beautiful girlfriends, but we have beer, and that is better, the ad implies. And the average man, whose wife is no longer, if she ever was, as good looking as the women of TV-land, can sympathize with a man just wanting the women to leave him alone and drink his beer, instead of handing him a list of chores, dragging him to visit her family, or wanting to talk about her day or her feelings.

23. I know what you mean. Remember when beer ads
were all about "hooking up"? Beautiful women hanging on men because of the beer they were drinking, making you feel that you, too, can get those babes if you drink that beer? And today, the men aren't interested in the women? :wtf:

30. Haven't seen the ad, but I suspect the young male viewer is
expected to think, "Look at that, a guy who looks like me, but he has experienced good-looking babes and beer both, and he prefers the beer! The beer must be better than the babes!"
