8. ...AND, the next day he surged ahead in the polls,
...despite what all the "experts" predicted.
Paul Wellstone personified "Principle before Political Expediency".
He was told he would surely lose if he went against Bush/Cheney & the War Machine with a 90% Approval rating at that time.

at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them."

if they'd been up for re-election? Absurd. And please not all those in the House that voted against it- despite being up for re-election.

31. I didn't get that at all.
I can't speak for that poster, but I don't think he was making any suggestions.
I didn't pick that up from his/her post at all,
but perhaps you are better at reading between the lines.

The Bush Administration chose to hold this vote very close to the election
precisely in order to put pressure on the Democrats,
and in many cases, was successful.

Paul Wellstone risked much more than the other Senators who were not UP for Re-election,
and that is worth a mention.
That vote may have cost him his life.

I was one of them in Minneapolis,
along with a strong contingent of Minnesota DUers at that time.

...but the Democrats in Congress who Stood Up AGAINST a President with a 90% Approval rating
in a country over run with Nationalistic Blood Lust had much more to lose than I did,
and deserve special recognition for their courage.

When he was my senator in Florida (he also was a governor of FL)He ran for presidency, but had to withdraw due to his heart problem. He would have made a great president. I met him in person when he was a governor. I was his huge fan, still am.

13. I didn't forget Obama.
Obama was NOT on the national stage in full view of the country STANDING AGAINST
an administration with a 90% approval rating in a country over run with Nationalistic Fury.

Obama did NOT cast a "NO" vote on the Authorization to Use Military Force in Iraq.
Therefore, he does NOT belong on this list.

You know,
not everything is about President Obama.

If you would like to post a list of every State/Local politician who was On the record for not approving of the IWR,
please feel free to do so.
I won't interfere.

Cheers.

Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 09:51 PM by jefferson_dem
Just thought I would point out that while he did not cast the vote, he too deserves credit for publicly opposing the war.

It's telling that you are willing to acknowledge that "millions" deserve credit, including yourself, but claim such offense at the mention of the President.

But it's your list. Carry on...

17. Why did YOU try to exclude him from the milllions I mentioned above.
I didn't.
Obama was one of those millions.
I also distinguished between those millions, and the Democrats who were in the national spotlight in Washington,
and singled THEM out for special Honor in my post above.
Should I mention the name of every State & Local Official who said they opposed the Iraq War?
If you want to do that,
be my guest.

I posted a thread honoring those Democrats who voted "NO" on the
Authorization to Use Force in Iraq.
Obama did NOT vote "NO" on the Authorization to Use Force,
so he does not belong on this list.

I'm sure Obama would have helped the Virgin Mary give birth to the Baby Jesus,
but he didn't. He wasn't there.
So he doesn't belong on the list of those who were there,
no matter how much you would like that.

If Obama did NOT vote "NO" on the Authorization to Use Military Force in Iraq,
then I did NOT "forget him."
He wasn't there!
It IS that simple.
Not everything is about President Obama.

Do you know what an Obsession is?

19. It took GUTS to STAND UP against the Republicans & Bush-the-Lesser in those days.
Especially in that political environment.

Vice President Cheney even threatened Senator Wellstone & his family if he did not vote FOR the IWR.
According to attendees at a meeting of Vets in St Paul,
Senator Wellstone told the group that Cheney had told him,
"We will do whatever it takes to get you. This will have severe ramifications for you and Minnesota."

Shortly after Senator Wellstone voted AGAINST the IWR, he was killed in a plane crash.
Things that make you go "Hmmmmm".

21. Byrd's speech on the Senate floor --
Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 12:32 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
Was one of the most impassioned, truthfull speeches I have ever heard.

Thank you to the Dems who had the courage.

Note who is missing from that list: soon-to-be Presidential candidates John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. They said plenty of the right things in their floor speeches, but they both had the WH in their sites and were too cowardly to do the right thing for fear of appearing weak. My respect for Kerry went down the tube after that vote.

Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 03:18 PM by ProSense
Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota) - Guess the IWR vote wasn't about money!

Jon Corzine (D-New Jersey) - Lost the NJ gubernatorial elections to Chris Christie. Why: people linked him to Goldman Sachs and bought Christie's bull about property taxes

Patty Murray (D-Washington) - Currently, a member of the Super Committee

Xavier Becerra (D-California) - Currently, a member of the Super Committee

Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) - Now Senator

Benjamin Cardin (D-Maryland)- Now Senator

James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) - Currently, a member of the Super Committee

Menendez - Now Senator. I was really mad at him because he voted for the torture amendment

Pelosi - Became Speaker of the House; now House Demcoratic leader.

Silvestre Reyes (TX) - Voted to defund Planned Parenthood

Sanders - Now Senator

Stupak - ugh!

Some of the soldiers that landed on Omaha Beach in 1944
later went on to become Alcoholics and Wife Beaters.
That does NOT diminish their Heroism and Courage on August 6, 1944.

Are you incapable of acknowledging the courage and integrity displayed by these Democrats
STANDING in OPPOSITION to a "War President" with a 90% approval rating
in October of 2002, less than a month before the election?

So far, that seems to be the case.
