Looking for Super Obama
Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 06:58 PM by McCamy Taylor
I. The Myth of the Birth of Obama

No, this is not a birther thread.

Remember when Bill Clinton called the Obama 2008 campaign a “fairy tale”? He was right, maybe in the way he meant or maybe in a way he did not mean. I don’t know what goes in inside the head of Bill Clinton, but I have a pretty good idea what goes on within the collective consciousness of American voters. Obama was the hero of a fairy tale that went something like…

Once upon a time there was a not-kingdom that was plagued by three dragons. One was called Racism. It was a mean old reptile that liked to build burning crosses and then light them afire with its breath. Another was called Colonialism. It got its kicks from stealing from folks in other countries. The final dragon was the worst of all. He was called Despair. His specialty was sneaking into homes at night and whispering to voters as they slept “Give it up, dude. There is nothing that you can do that will change anything in this country.”

Everyone in the not-kingdom was terrified of the three dragons. They prayed for a savior. So, when a likely candidate appeared, one who fulfilled the criteria for hero (as set out by Otto Rank), they rallied behind him. And they beat that old dragon, Racism. They stomped that monster, Colonialism. And they sent Despair into outer space.

And then, they all lived happily ever after---until it was time to go back to their daily lives.

So, what went wrong? First, very few people actually bothered to listen to the Hero Obama. They were too busy admiring their own reflections in the gleam of the halo which they had placed on top of his head. They were going to end racism. They were going to end colonialism. They were going to end despair. All this by sending a check and putting a bumper sticker on their car and writing some stuff online and casting a vote. Whoopee! We are all heroes!

If they had listened to Hero Obama, they might have noticed that warrantless wiretap was ok with him. They would have heard him mention his plans to escalate the war in Afghanistan. They would have noted that most of his money came from corporate donors. They would have looked under the bus and seen Reverend Wright, a liberation theologist who was more in step with the left wing of the United States than the Senator from Exelon.

But who needed to listen? The man was so young, so attractive. So JFK-like, as confirmed by Kennedy’s own family. Sorry, did I call him a “man”? I mean demigod.

Three years later, the deity has clay feet that reach all the way to the top of his head---and a whole lot of would be heroes-at-the-voting-booth are fuming “We got robbed!”

Sorry to tell you this, but you were not robbed. You gave it away yourself. Next time, maybe you will listen to your Founder who said “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”

II. We Won’t Get Fooled Again!

Back in 2008, I wrote a journal that sank like a lead balloon at DU. I called it “Obama as Messiah: The Myth of the Birth of the President.” For anyone who is scratching their heads trying to figure out why left wing Democrats deified a man who was on record as supporting tax breaks for oil companies (the Energy Policy Act of 2005) and advocating the escalation of the war in Afghanistan, the link below might help shine some light on the subject.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2615969

The majority of Americans value judgments of the heart more than those of the head. Could be our rugged individualism. Popeye speaks for all of us when he says “I y’am what I y’am.” Maybe it is because we distrust authority, which has always lied to us. (Gulf of Tonkin resolution ring any bells?) Or does it have something to do with the way our schools get coaches to teach history and social studies, almost as if they want to raise us ignorant of the way our government works?

Now, there is nothing wrong with putting your candidate on a pedestal. It makes the election process much more fun. Thanks to wall to wall media coverage and unlimited campaign spending, presidential elections in this country are almost a spectator sport----Political Olympics! You just have to keep reminding yourself that once the election is over, your guy or gal will have to step off the pedestal, at which point that big gold medal is not going to do a whole lot to right the wrongs that afflict this country.

It should be easier this time. We learned our lesson in 2008. In 2012, we will put substance above image. We will listen to the candidates’ words and not how he or she delivers them. Right?

Right?

III. We Don’t Need Another Hero, We Need… a Superhero

Oh looky! It’s election time already. How did three years pass so quickly? Time to go to the polls to nominate another Democrat for president. What are we shopping for this year? Forget hope and brotherly love. Those are soooo 2008. There is a class war going on this time, and we need a president who can kick some butt. It is not enough to merely suggest that the rich give up some tax breaks so the federal government can invest in jobs creations. No, we want our leader to terminate those tax cuts---terminate with extreme prejudice. Forget about Medicare solvency. Our leader must be prepared to save Medicare. If the House Republicans cripple him by failing to repeal the 30% mandatory Medicare provider cuts that go into effect in January---- if they slice off Obama’s right hand, he should strap a chainsaw on the stump and show them what’s what. Because he is the Super president. He does not need Constitutional authorization. He can leap tall buildings in a single bound and write new legislation all by himself.

Naw, just kidding. A Super President can not write legislation by himself. That would be impossible. A Super-duper President uses his extrasensory powers to force Congress to do his will.

This time around we are looking for someone with 1) a spine, 2) balls, 3) an automatic rifle in case all else fails. Oops! That sounded like a Republican. Democrats do not want their president to carry a gun. No, they want him to use his laser beam eyes.

In the 2012 election, the pressing question is not “Will he support the middle class?” The question I hear over and over at DU is “Will he fight?” for us. So, at this point, I would like to suggest the 2012 Democratic Dream Team: Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and former television star, Mr. T. Kicking ass for a better tomorrow.

PS Because I am a rugged individual, I am sending off right now for my Obama 2012 bumper sticker. Yes, I did not support him in the 2008 primary (I supported him in the general, of course). Yes, I worried that the folks who praised him to the skies were not really paying attention. But I think he is doing a pretty good job all things considered---even if he does not have laser beam eyes and extrasensory powers. Consider this my official endorsement. Might have to consider moving to General Discussion: President, though.

2. What an insulting load of bullshit. The only people who thought he was a superhero...
...were the ones who expected him to singlehandedly clean up ten years worth of fuckups overnight. This is nothing but an asinine attempt to mock and belittle people who actually support the President for working to do his job within the political reality of the last three years.

8. Well written...we heard Hope, we heard Change, and we heard
Not Bush...that was good enough for a lot of us, or at least for me, at that time.
The euphoria has worn off and the reality has set in...we elected a man who is doing pretty much what he said he would do and your prior post enforces that. Thanks:smoke:

17. Hard to really have much change when the political party that looses swears
do to all they can do to take you out and then uses every trick in the book to do so including holding up and blocking legislation that would actually help the country in order to achieve that goal.

definite lines in the sand giving the progressives something to hang on to. I'm in a bit of a limbo here..I will probably vote for him because I think his second four years will be more productive without the pressure of another re-election.

24. True it would have been nice if he had but
I believe he has decided that its more important to do his job as president is which is to govern and try to find a way to work with people even ones he might agree with completely, its just to bad the republicans decided otherwise and instead decided making the country better for as many people as possible wasnt their most important job.

no one lived happily ever after; not even Bill.

I would just like to see that side of your 2008 primary stories.

That said, I'm glad you will support Obama early this time. That's appeciated. :hi:

32. My 08 story is that Obama was openly employing hate preachers
'ex gay' evangelists, and 'gospel stars' who were infamous for various attacks on minority groups they don't like, for calling those minorities 'vampires' and calling for open war on those minorities, whom they accused of great crimes including killing Christian children. When the slandered members of those minority groups spoke up, the Senator, his wife and his supporters rallied about the invective shouters, told us we had to compromise with those who accuse us falsely, in public, of murder.
Those who should have been appalled at such language, and at all that such language indicates instead defended that language, defended the speakers of that invective, and declared that openly hostile, anti minority language as a necessary political modality.
That Primary was what it was. One week, Obama was hosting 'faith and family' rallies, with openly intolerant preachers, the next he was smirking at Pennsylvania for 'clinging to god and fear of those unlike themselves'. Anyone who could look at first the Faith Rallies with Ex Gays and then hear him criticize others for having faith, well, selective thinking, situational ethics. Dogmatic, religious intolerance defended when his campaign employed it, criticized when the table turned, and the intolerance was not for me, but for thee. THAT intolerance, very bad, but calling gay people vampires, he said that was an opinion shared by 'good, decent, and moral people'.
McClurkin was the day the Party died. The Party I was born into. For which I have never missed an election, unlike some who carry a pretense but lack the history.

11. The Irony Hurts
I wish I had seen your thread at the time. The nation is going to have to undergo 4 years of Mad Hatter Tea Party and grow a true Populist candidate. I don't think there's any in the wings, either, so it could take a lot longer.

If we could get the banksters' thumbs off the scales of justice, things might start to improve around here...just a thought.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-11 01:10 AM by markpkessinger
... rather than announce his concessions before negotiations even begin. The suggestion that there is no middle ground between a Cantor/Kyl and President Capitulate is just absurd on its face.

More importantly, though, your response to my post is the exact same sort of straw man tactic the OP uses: i.e., in the case of the OP, that the only reason anyone on the left one could possibly be unhappy with the President is because that person must have been expecting a "Messiah," or a "Hero," or a "Superhero," as if there is no middle ground between being a disappointed naif or marching in lockstep with Obama supporters. In setting the absurd false dichotomy between the intransigence of a Cantor/Kyl or a President who gives away the store, you are doing the exact same thing. It's a dishonest argument.

He was referring to Obama's stance on the war in Iraq and how he changed his tune to suit his political needs.

The reason for Michelle's SADNESS on the 8th during the speech. NOT anger SADNESS!
I know this material well, have bookmarked articles for each story for a decade. ( Makes me wonder, if Internet/Computer upgrades were intentional for the purpose of losing our bookmarked stuff?)
Pluto squared to Uranus,1st time in 235 years, planets where they were in 1776!

Let the revelations continue..........the veterans are coming home!
Nothing new here but it it is interesting to see the entire story, ( that we have pieced together over the years, obscure news article by news article, & bookmarked piece by piece,
summed up in one article, by a respected if somewhat controversial editor. There are many interesting articles in this publication.

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2011/09/09/chatter-obama-sought-arrest-of-bush-and-cheney-for-911-treason/

there is one detail that is assumed rather than explained.
<"If 3,000 people could be murdered on 9/11 without the blink of an eye, the daughter of a president could be given cancer just as easily.">

I posted to AW 6 or 7 years ago......Helen Thomas describes in one of her books ( sorry can't remember which one) that I took out from our local library,( not indy publisher, not banned, not burned) how she was talking to Martha Mitchell on the phone, when thugs broke into her hotel room, tackled her and injected her in rear end. Within a year Mitchell got cancer and died, thus eliminating a loud voice for the TRUTH. Attempts to discredit Mitchell as a crazy alcoholic hadn't been sufficient. She was fearful enough for her life to check into a hotel rather than stay at home, & to keep in touch with Helen, a friend. Her husband John Mitchell had already been put in prison, I think.

34. President Obama inherited a disaster.
Anyone who aspired to be president had more courage than brains. The situation today has gone from serious to desperate. If the Republicans prevail, they will inherit a even more helpless situation than Obama faces. The very policies that they support, unrestrained capitalism, are the very cause of the present state of the economy. There is very little hope for any significant recovery simply because there is nothing to recover with. All of the basic manufacturing has all been outsourced.

Any promise of recovery by either party is pure fantasy. People fail to understand that our nation was founded on the principle of protectionism. Until the Civil War, when a very moderate income tax on the wealthy was passed, all federal revenues were derived from tariffs and continued to be the major source of federal revenue until WWII. The founders of our Republic were firmly committed to a policy of self reliance that resulted in the creation of the most powerful industrial nation ever created. Industry was basically concentrated in the North as the Southerners soon found provided the North with a unsurmountable advantage. It was also the reason that we eventually prevailed in WWII. The amount of munitions, ships, planes, that were produced was staggering when the industrial base was transformed virtually over-night to support the war effort. AS the Japanese Admiral remarked after Pearl Habor, we have awaken a tiger. Is there a solution. Yes, but it in today's political climate that is dominated by global capitalists there is little hope of it being employed. It would call for tariffs to level the playing field for American workers coupled with significant increases in income taxes for the top 10% who now control over 90% or the nation's wealth. This will only take place when the working class is reduced to the poverty levels of the early 20th centlury that existed prior to the Great Depression, but by then it very well may be too late.
