Back in the 1800's, it was fairly common for the poor (who couldn't afford glass windows) to bury old glass bottles into the walls of their adobe or sod walled homes. The glass allowed daylight from the outside to pass into the buildings, keeping away that "dark cave" feel. There are still quite a few examples of them in western ghost towns. As I understand it, it's also still practiced among the very poor in northern Mexico.
The advantage of using glass bottles was that you could fill the bottle with mud, which prevented people from looking into your home through the bottles, and acted as insulation in cold weather. The glass bottle walls were still thick enough to transmit light into the building around the dirt...like a very primitive form of fiber optics.
