GOP hopes for upset special election win in N.Y. Democratic district
NEW YORK — President Obama is not on the ballot in Tuesday’s surprisingly close congressional election here, but Republicans in Queens are doing everything they can to make the race a verdict on his performance.

This bastion of Democrats is tilting toward a 70-year-old Republican businessman who has never elected to any office, and whose campaign is focused on “sending a message” to Obama — over both the economy and his support for a Palestinian state and rolling back Israel’s borders to the 1967 lines, a big issue for many 9th District Jews.

If he pulls off the upset, Bob Turner would become the first House Republican representing this portion of Queens since the 1920s — a striking achievement in a district that elected the late Geraldine Ferraro, her party’s 1984 vice presidential nominee, now-Sen. Charles Schumer and, for the previous 12-plus years, the pugnacious Anthony Weiner.

He is too weak to support Palestine, yet some zionists on the left left has shown it will cut his throat for anything less than servitude to it.

4. 29% of DEMOCRATIC voters are going for the Republican...
"Turner's winning in a heavily Democratic district for two reasons: a huge lead with independents and a large amount of crossover support. He's ahead by 32 points at 58-26 with voters unaffiliated with either major party. And he's winning 29% of the Democratic vote, holding Weprin under 60% with voters of his own party, while losing just 10% of Republican partisans.

If Turner wins on Tuesday it will be largely due to the incredible unpopularity of Barack Obama dragging his party down in the district. Obama won 55% there in 2008 but now has a staggeringly bad 31% approval rating, with 56% of voters disapproving of him. It's a given that Republicans don't like him but more shocking are his 16% approval rating with independents and the fact that he's below 50% even with Democrats at 46% approving and 38% disapproving. Obama trails Mitt Romney 46-42 in a hypothetical match up in the district and leads Rick Perry only 44-43."
