Bachmann...women and girls should have a choice........
ok, so Backward Bachmann says women and girls should have a choice in getting HPV shots. Seems a tad hypocritical and even stupid given her stand on other "choice" issues.

2. The way that issue cuts across the right/left divide is interesting
Conservatives are usually pissed off because they don't want girls being inoculated for an STD, but the homeschool/raw milk faction also doesn't trust big pharma, which is what Bachmann hit, and neither does the side of the left that's anti-Gardasil. My own issue is with the marketing (calling it a "cervical cancer vaccine" is horribly misleading and might lead people not to get tested) rather than the vaccine itself. Maybe the lesson is that anti-vaccine craziness knows no ideology.

3. The whole pharma good/bad
acknowledgin STD good/bad, etc etc is so convoluted as to be complete outside of the bounds of normal reason. I can't make heads or tails of the ever moving goal posts.

4. Yeah. I saw a bit of her rant.
You would have thought that a vaccine to prevent cancer was like forcing arranged marriages or something...
Hopefully, she will be gone soon. Unless she gets drafted for vp.

5. It doesn't prevent cancer
It prevents one of the causes of a common precursor to cancer. Like I said above, that marketing issue is my one problem with Gardasil.

6. To me, anything that can help prevent
growth of pre-cancer cells is a good thing.

11. I certainly don't know all of the stats and costs

But the relevant public health question is one of net benefit. Are there independent numbers on that?

14. Well the long-term studies aren't in yet
There's a line of evidence that lesions are decreasing, but there's another line that other strains of HPV are actually held in check by 16 and 18 (the two Gardasil prevents) and it ends up being a wash. We'll have some results in I think 5 years. At any rate there's no harm and a possible benefit so I'm for having it available, I just worry people will think "oh I had the vaccine" and so not get pap smears.

9. Let's face it...
If HPV caused men's penises to shrivel up and fall off, there would be no controversy surrounding this vaccine.

13. Choice/no choice...arbitrary implementation for sure.
Her personal will apparently is what counts. I suppose one can assume Bachmann has that kind of presumption when God is leading this Christian Soldier on to battle against the rest of us mindless heathens. Do I need the sarcasm smilie?
