Republican John Kyl Threatens To Quit Super Committee If Defense Cuts Are On The Table

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/09/09/republican-john-kyl-threatens-to-quit-super-committee-if-defense-cuts-are-on-the-table/

At a luncheon held shortly after the first meeting of the super committee by the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation, Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said he is “off of the committee if we are going to talk about further defense cuts.”

CNN reports that Kyl said cuts should come from “entitlement” programs like Medicare and Social Security, not defense spending.”

This is a real non-starter for a committee that is charged with cutting $1.5 trillion in spending. Kyl should be replaced with a Republican who is at least willing to put defense cuts on the table. Social Security and Medicare have nothing to do with our debt problem. Defense, however, does.
Ten years of war have produced an inflated national debt and trillions of dollars have been spent. Social Security and Medicare funds on the other hand, are paid for through FICA taxes and monthly premiums. Social Security has a two trillion dollar surplus and does not account for one penny of the budget. If anything needs to be cut from the budget, it’s defense spending. Even if we cut the defense budget in half, it would still be the largest defense budget in the world.

good, let him quit. hopefully he could be replaced with someone sane

2. Good riddance. Kyl is the last person I would want on a committee.
It's win-win. :)

4. "Further" defense cuts, Mr. Kyl?
We spend more than $2 billion a day on defense - at least what's on the books. Who knows how much else is spent in unaccountable and uncounted ways? I wonder if any of the bulldogs of our Fourth Estate will have the temerity to ask Sen. Kyl if he could identify any defense cuts that have been made such that he is so dead set against "further" cuts.

11. Maybe we could get a rule passed saying that quitters will be replaced by member of opposite party
of course, you'd need two parties to implement such a rule.

13. When will someone make the case that cutting defense is good for national security?
Counter-intuitive, I know...but what's the point of spending huge sums of money we don't have, fighting wars without end against an enemy that we can't define? What is accomplished in the defense of this country if all we really do is destroy the domestic economy, degrade our environment and healthcare, and our kids educational heritage in the process? At some point, we need to ask, what are we defending and how does this budget protect us if it helps destroy our way of life in the process?

Seriously, if we keep this up for another decade, we'll become the Soviet Union of the 21st Century. And perhaps this is what those people making political decisions today are really after.

14. Gee..I wonder what the Dems will do?
I'm really on the edge of my seat wondering if they'll actually say "Screw you. Go ahead and quit." and stand up for themselves, or if they'll cave and say "O.K. Republicans. Whatever you want."

I mean seriously, talk about being breathless with anticipation over not knowing what the outcome of a Republican playing any kind of brinksmanship or chicken with Dems could possibly be.

:sarcasm:
