Why does "bleed lead" at DU? The 9/11 jumper story is still here! |

As are many other DOOM stories long past their expiration date!
Chill out!

4. I would like to point out as that is MY posting... |
|
That this is the first really indepth article trying to look at the phenomenon and the attached stigma. The article transcends 911 because it allows us to view the humanity associated and the choices we make--when all those choices are equally horrific. It also lets us explore why choices in death are so taboo--even when death is inevitable.
The article also looks at how the families have dealt with the issue and the surprising breadth of reactions. Some family members were actually comforted by the thought that their loved one may have made a conscious decision to control how they met their fate. It also looks at the ethics of including the stories of these individuals and limited photos in a isolated area of the 911 museum--while giving visitors the choice to view or not.
In short these are human issues that far extend beyond 911. It is clear you did not read the thread, nor the article to which it refers.
In short, you jumped to conclusions and decided to deride other DUers for your own agenda. I say shame on you.

28. It's not just the media's fault. A lot of people here don't want to hear about it. |
|
There were some very negative and angry reactions when the media did initially report on it and show the images in the immediate aftermath.

18. Because the people who are hurting the worst from this economy were gone from DU a long time ago |
|
Computer stopped working and couldn't afford to get it fixed? Couldn't afford a connection to the Internet? Lost their homes? Whatever?
The people with most at stake have lost their voices here.
That is why we have 911 jumper threads, cow in the driveway threads, coyotes in abandoned houses threads and other such nonsense.
We are being spammed by people who are not hurting and have nothing better to do than peddle bullshit in their spare time.
That way we aren't talking about important subjects that actually effect peoples lives.

I've not known you to so cavalierly offer such blanket condemnation. See my post upstream (#4) describing what the article article and thread was actually all about as it appears you have not read the thread or its linked article. If you still feel that way, fine, but kindly take the time to at least read and know what it is you are criticizing. The article discussed in that thread is NOT gratuitous nor sensational. It is beautifully written and stimulated some very thoughtful and considered discussion. It presents a theme that is as old as mankind itself-- how we deal with death, our own and those of others and the taboos associated. Hardly a trivial or vapid issue.
The specific aspects discussed are difficult for many to contemplate. For this reason (and despite the article being sensitively written)I worked very hard to make sure that I posted in such a way to allow DUers to choose (or not) to go to the link and then the article, and finally to the photo (which I did NOT embed). I offered a very brief, but comprehensive overview of what the article was all about to allow those clicking on the thread the ability to decide whether they wanted to go further.
I'm really sorry to be lumped in your categorical condemnation, as I don't believe I deserve to be. If you take the time to read the thread and article and still feel there was no value, then I misjudged you all these many years.

I still miss all the links to articles I used to be able to follow. A thread would start with a question or an assertion and it would be supported with links to many sources. Other DUers added more links and the thread ended up bookmarked. We should have a bookmark thread sometime. The best of DU.
on edit: I thought the thread on the "jumpers" was a valid one. Many of us never knew the real story and have always remembered the horror.
