The Democratic Party strategy for Obama winning the 2012 election is based on two main assumptions

Problems Ahead for Obama?
by Jack A. Smith
September 12th, 2011

(1) The first assumption is that the GOP will be perceived by much of the electorate as having moved too far to the right, alienating independent voters who will now vote for Obama in greater number, and keeping the dissident Democrats in line. There is also the possibility of splits between the Tea Party stalwarts and the less doctrinaire parent party as a whole and possibly within the TP itself.

(2) The second assumption is that the GOP simply does not have a broadly attractive presidential candidate if the field remains narrowed to Tea Party favorites such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, or flagrantly opportunist conservative former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, backed up by secondary candidates including libertarian Texas Rep. Ron Paul and longshot mainstream Republican former Utah Gov. John M. Huntsman. At this point Perry (an aggressive climate change and evolution denier, who thinks Social Security is a Ponzi scheme) and Romney (who probably was the last of the “moderate Republicans” until raw ambition and hypocrisy drove this multimillionaire to the farther right) have the inside track. Palin hasn’t announced yet.

For his part, President Obama will strive to convince the American people that the Republicans are entirely responsible for the political gridlock in Washington. He will charge the GOP with putting petty party interests ahead of “American,” not merely Democratic, interests, intentionally conflating the two to imply the Republicans are lacking patriotism. The White House will propagate the notion that Tea Party extremists left Obama with “no choice” but to cut social programs to lower the deficit instead of fighting harder for taxing the rich, and “no option” but to put Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid up for grabs — concessions that were in fact entirely voluntary. It is highly doubtful for obvious reasons that the Democratic candidate will repeat his most stirring crowd pleaser from the 2008 campaign — “Our time has come, our movement is real, and change is coming to America.”

The Democratic domestic platform will be a glistening cornucopia of promises and good intentions for every sector — the right, center, and even a trifle for the left. In essence, however, it will tilt toward conservatism. There will be elevating talk about needed programs, but it is highly doubtful a viable social agenda that serves the needs of an increasingly desperate American people will emerge from an Obama triumph, including anything more than token gestures toward rebuilding infrastructure or protecting the environment. Foreign policy will remain the same, as will military/national security strategy and its ruinous price tag. Full spectrum power and global domination remain the name of the imperial game.

17. The strategy is more "our candidate is bad, but there's is scary!"
We can do better than this.

Our party is better than this.

many of us have many different qualities, but some are well known for not 'listening' but spouting one liners they hear from Beck and the likes of those - if it means an attack on the President, these will take any and all insults, and repeat repeat repeat ad nauseam and spread that fertilizer here - because a lot here like the smell of shit talk against the President.

sorry, not taking your bait.

11. In other words you haven't read the article but reject any and all articles that may be critical of

Obama's policies.

Got it.

13. Is that why you refuse to engage in discussion any and all DU'ers who might not agree with Obama?

That's a pretty lame excuse.

Perhaps if you posted intelligent rebuttals to articles you disagree with DU'ers wouldn't, as you put it, "pounce" on you.

Drive by personal attacks won't gain anyones respect.

14. Nothing reminds me of the ruinous price tag
of The PermaWars and the imperial game more than the child in the banner picture. A whole generation of children that age that have never known the dividends of peace and the prosperity.
An America not at war. Multiple wars.

19. And what do you think it is when
Edited on Wed Sep-14-11 12:23 AM by Occulus
people who are not happy with Obama's performance as President hear Obama supporters smugly assert, "where ya gonna go?"

Is that not the work of the GOP, too? Or is it only okay when his supporters do it?

I have all the reason I need not to vote for Obama a second time: he's a bigot. He thinks my ability to get married should be left up to the state I'm living in, the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the United States Constitution be damned (he is a Constitutional scholar, right?).

I will not vote for anyone who expresses that sentiment. I doubly will not for someone who should damned good and well know better; that idea was wrong yesterday and it's wrong today!

Let me tell you something: Barack Obama has done more to drive former supporters away from Barack Obama than anyone else, be they Democrat, Republican, Tea Partier, bloody fucking lunatic, or Michelle Palin (sorry, didn't mean to repeat myself there at the end). The one thing Independents (whom we hear, again and again on DU, are the 'coveted middle' politicians who want to be elected MUST grab) like to see, more than anything else- and I know this because I personally know quite a few who are either Indie or are completely disinterested in politics as a whole- is an exposed and obvious spine, and that's the one thing Obama has not shown them.

Strength. Obama lacks it. Badly. People want a leader, not a weathervane. He who grabs the brass ring gets the prize, and Obama isn't even reaching for it (I cynically expect this to change now that the 2012 campaign is gearing up). Thus far, Obama's Presidency has been like to an Imperial dynasty known for paving roads. We need more than that, and we need it now, not in the next term.

I wanted this President to succeed. I truly did. But quite literally within the first five minutes of his administration, he slapped every GLBTStarStarStar who supported his campaign directly in the face. I knew, right then, pretty much instantly, that Obama would disappoint, and the only question was to degree. How did I know? Because many of us GLBTs are hyperfuckingsensitive to the attitudes of anyone who 'doesn't like fags' or 'hates fags' or 'wants to kill fags' (our lives sometimes depend on that), and we know, through experience, that people who feel that way toward us aren't often the most enlightened of specimens in other areas.

We were shouted down, loudly and publicly. "PONY!" people cried. "POUTRAGE! PRESIDENT PALIN!" And then Obama caved to Republicans on this, and that, and the other thing, and all of a sudden, more and more people started getting angry. This isn't the result of whining, or poutrage, or people working against Obama- this is the result of Obama working against Obama, and he damned well better shape his ass up, or he's going to be in trouble during the election.

I don't have any doubt he'll win, which is why I feel safe in withholding my vote for President for the first time in my life. Maybe I'm totally wrong and he'll sail right on through the campaign to the greatest landslide win we've seen since Carter/Reagan. Maybe he'll be trounced by a wave of discontent he didn't see coming; the 2012 election is still quite some time off. I really do wish the man the best, but he'll have to attain his goal without me, because he gave up on me years ago and I really don't expect much from another four years with him at the helm. I gave him all the chance I could until about a month or so ago, but he just didn't deliver.

That's not the fault of anyone on DU. The blame for that lies squarely with Barack Obama.
