OH redistricting eliminates Sutton, Kucinich, both Ds.
http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/206464/3/Redistricting-eliminates-Suttons-Kucinichs-districts

The Republicans have used their state hegemony to redraw Congressional districts the way they want. This and the anti-union laws are the worst effects of the 2010 elections for this state.

I'm not going to cry over Kucinich, he was more of a publicity hound than a working member of Congress, but Sutton hurts. She has been a solidly progressive member of Congress and a vocal critic of the state Rs' union busting and voter suppression efforts. I guess that's why she had to go. She barely won reelection in '10 against car dealer and misogynist asshole, Tom Ganley.

20. He's not who you think he is.
Like I said. I live here. Name one piece of legislation that he wrote. Name one standing committee he has chaired. He doesn't play well with others and his Congressional record is wafer-thin, especially for such a veteran.

Politics is no place for hero worship.

We wouldn't be in the shithole right now IF some of the legislation he has introduced made it past the fucking "centrists" in the party.

Here are the last FIVE years of bills he has sponsored or co-sponsored. Doesn't look to be wafer-thin to me...but you can't expect one principaled man to be very effective in a pit of lobbyist sponsored shills.

How the hell do you expect him to get a committee membership? REALLY? With all of the corporate money that flows through Congress? Someone who is principaled isn't going to get anywhere.

40. I'm GLAD he doesn't play well with "Centrists"
The problem I have with "Centrists" is that they agree with Republicans too much.

Going Along to Get Along is what got us in this trouble.
Give me a Democrat who will STAND & FIGHT for traditional Democratic Values,
like Dennis Kucinich.

We need MORE Kuciniches, not less.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Solidarity!

PROOF that we did NOT get out the vote. It pains me so badly. Colorado stayed blue because I got hundreds of people to go to the polling stations. I even gave rides to a few guys and before polls closed we walked about 40 of us, mostly impoverished / poorer people to the Church that was doing the polling in our area.

We won by around 5000 votes. 2010 was my best year for elections ever because it was the first time what I did mattered significantly, objectively. (Note, my city still went Red, but the state went Blue by around 5000 votes.)

This sucks! Betty Sutton is a friend of mine and my wife and I actively supporter here since she ran to replace Sherrod Brown in 2006. And whatever reservations I have about Kucinich, he's still a D vote and not a DINO either.

BTW, I lived in Kucinich's district in the 1990s and supported him against against the R who replaced Mary Rose Oakar in '94.

His predecessor, DeWine, was never very strong. And Brown had name recognition from being Sec. of State in the 80s. That was the same year Ds swept the state offices. He is in for a fight next year. Most of this state thinks Kucinich is kind of a weirdo (I don't, BTW).

18. Yeah, but gerrymandering works.
Strong R and D areas are manipulated to deprive the other side (us, in this case) of majorities in as many places as possible. Say there are even numbers of Ds and Rs in State X and 10 districts. 50/50 districts will make each one competitive. But suppose the Rs can create three districts where Ds have near unanimity. In the other 7 districts Rs have anywhere from 55 to 60% majorities. That will all but insure R hegemony.

53. Gerrymandering can't beat passion and working one's ass off.
Democrats win republican districts have to work harder. But they can win by comfortable margins if they work and out smart their republican opponent. Democrats can't have any more Martha Coakley campaigns, anywhere.

61. actually in Kucinich's case they have
The Cleveland area can no longer support 2 complete congressional districts so his got combined with the east side. The east side is a majority minority district. The white, ethnic, catholics who voted for Kucinich have largely moved out of the area.

19. May Gain a Dem in Central Ohio
The current districting in Central Ohio made it very difficult on the Dems because Columbus was split down the middle with GOP leaning suburbs included in both districts. The silver-lining is that there is a chance that former Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy could win the newly formed Columbus seat.

Personally, it upsets me that OH is going to lose any Dems.

24. "While we haven't seen a map," a statement from Sutton's office reads, "Betty Sutton is running."
Good! I came to ask if she was still going to run, and I'm damn glad she's not giving up despite the gerrymandering. I hope you fight for her. Glad I read the whole article because that statement is at the end. :hi:

41. I didn't vote for those assholes.
Having moved more than once, I can tell you I voted for both Sutton and Kucinich (in different elections, of course). I think I still have my Kucinich "Light up Congress" lawn sign somewhere. I was poor then, so no money for his campaign. My wife and I gave a good about of money to Sutton, $5000 to Ted Strickland and the Federal maximum for both Sherrod Brown and John Kerry. Sadly, I'm not so flush anymore.

If I had not done any of that the only thing that would be different is that I would have a new kitchen now.

45. You must not know much about Kucinich.
Rather than selling out like so many in Congress, he has continued to fight the machine put together by the likes of Poppy Bush and his Wall Street CIA paymasters.

48. I live here. I'm aware of his paucity of achievement.
Your characterization is based on wishful thinking and not on his actual record. People vote for him because it is a heavily D district and they don't want an R.

57. True. I live in Detroit. For a while, Kucinich's family was so poor they lived in a car.
Sorry he seems ineffectual to you, but the record is clear he's been one of the few in Congress to actually want to help others in similar circumstances. A couple people I know and respect have worked for him.

67. Wow, has this thread ever been sidetracked. For the record...
...I meant this thread as a criticism of Rs who use power to reinforce hegemony. I was not "attacking" Kucinich. I don't have much regard for him as member of Congress and I said so. That's my honest opinion. To suggest otherwise would be a lie, something I am unwilling to do to any of you or to myself. You may admire Kucinich and that is your prerogative. I have no obligation to share your feelings or to pretend to. I have no obligation to shut up about my feelings. In fact, I think that if I complain that Kucinich will be gone with mentioning my criticisms, then I am lying by omission.

Hell, I have to wonder how many of you who are lambasting me for being critical of Kucinich were excoriating Hillary Clinton and her supporters during the primaries. Don't expect me to believe that there is some unwritten solidarity among Ds or even liberals because there isn't. Which brings me to my next point. Anyone who denies my liberal or progressive credentials is an ignoramus. I take such remarks as proof positive of ignorance on the subject.

I was trying to have if not a serious discussion, then at least a sympathetic rant about fascist Rs who use any means necessary to crush any opposition. Apparently, I can't do that without ignoring reality and joining the echo chamber. So, from now on I will stick to the lounge, subject specific forums and will have my real discussions on other websites.

68. Why is this kind of redistricting not illegal?
Deliberate targeting of the other party's (or of particular people) should be illegal. In fact, I think all redistricting decisions in every state need to be made by nonpartisan/bipartisan commissions and not by the state legislature, whatever party they might belong to.
