Friends: Watching a miracle as Giffords opens eye
Friends: Watching a miracle as Giffords opens eye

TUCSON, AZ - The scene inside Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' hospital room yesterday was like "watching a miracle," one of her closest friends in Congress said.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is a close friend of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. She and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., recounted for journalists aboard Air Force One last night the emotional scene as they watched their friend respond to them during their visit.

"It felt like we were watching a miracle," said Wasserman Schultz, who helped recruit Giffords to run for Congress in 2006.

1. And they were watching a miracle...
Especially if she saw them...

2. The miracle of modern medicine and science prevails again.
How would we live without it?

3. There's that word again.
A "miracle" would have been if Giffords had been shot in the head, but then got up and walked away, perfectly fine. Scratch that - a "miracle" would have been a divine force manifesting itself, stopping the bullets from the shooter's gun in midair, and then telling him he was wrong for doing so, thus saving the lives of the people who died.

Instead, she was severely injured and thanks to a bunch of technology invented by smart people, and a bunch of medical personnel dedicated to helping the sick and injured, she is making wonderful progress toward recovery.

And we mourn those who were not so lucky.
