Polls close in tight NY House special election
NEW YORK -- Democrat David Weprin faced an unusually tight race against Republican Bob Turner in a special election Tuesday in New York's heavily Democratic 9th Congressional District, where voters unhappy with President Barack Obama could elect a Republican for the first time.

The contest to replace disgraced Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned in a sexting scandal, had become too close to call, with public opinion polling showing a slight edge for Turner, a retired media executive with no previous political experience.

3. Turner might win this one by courting the Israel First crowd
but that district is #1 on the list of districts to be eliminated in the next redistricting go-around.

He could be the shortest serving Rep in history who hasn't died in office.

4. Polls Close in New York House Special Election to Replace Weiner

Republican Bob Turner, (l) is leading Democrat David Weprin in New York's special election to replace disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner.

NEW YORK –  Democrat David Weprin faced an unusually tight race against Republican Bob Turner in a special election Tuesday in New York's heavily Democratic 9th Congressional District, where voters unhappy with President Barack Obama could elect a Republican for the first time.

The contest to replace disgraced Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned in a sexting scandal, had become too close to call, with public opinion polling showing a slight edge for Turner, a retired media executive with no previous political experience.

Both candidates hit the streets Tuesday, meeting voters and trying to boost turnout, the key in most special elections. Weprin had a full public schedule of get-out-the-vote events, while Turner's only scheduled public appearances were his vote Tuesday morning and an after-the-vote party at a restaurant. His campaign said he would be out in the district all day drumming up support.

7. One day people will care more about how a politician votes than his/her sex life
but until that day, we'll end up with BULLSHIT like this while one of the strongest progressives in congress is no more. i hold little hope for this country at this point. :(

10. That may actually have been part of Weprin problem. He voted for the marriage equality
law a few months back while he was in the NY Assembly. Not a very popular position with Orthodox Jews who make up a good sized portion of the electorate in the District. Not living in the district may have had something to do with it as well. How in the hell did the party put up this guy?
