Texas drought worsens from 'abysmal'
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 12:09 PM by nadinbrzezinski
Drought conditions in Texas that have fueled wildfires and devastated farmers and ranchers actually worsened in the past week while several other states also saw spreading drought, according to a weekly report issued Thursday.

16. We got to mid July here with 0.02 inches of rain for the whole year
I think we're finally up over an inch after a few showers over the summer, but things are still very dry. All I hope is that the winter compensates for it, even if it means I have to break out the snow shovel I brought with me from Boston and have used exactly twice in 20 years.

You're not getting any rain because we're not getting any rain upstream.

17. i went to red river beginning of aug. they had been dry, but a couple weeks before, they started
getting their rain. it was actually cool enough for me to wear a jacket. NM is one of my saving graces, living in this area. i didnt realize you were that dry. i didnt realize you lived next door either.

farmers almenac is not calling for much snow this year either. we had only one last year. way cold. colder than normal. but no snow.

i love my snow. grew up in Az and Calif, i love the snow.

9. There is already talk that the cattle industry will collapse.
not enough water for the cows, not enough water for hay.

There have been video on the local channels here of ranchers selling their heads of cattle at auction. Some of the poor animals are so thin.

If anything maybe this will help curb the factory cattle industry.

Which means we have no clue as to what will happen with the world's weather as time goes by. Maybe Texas and the Southwest and Northern Mexico will be our own Sahara Dessert in a few decades. The Sahara Dessert used to be tropical at one time.

53. Did the almanac predict this year's weather conditions?
I'm really curious about weather predictions now. The redistribution of water (solid liquid and gas) used to be predictable, but now that there's more of it going into the atmosphere because of global warming wouldn't there be a whole new paradigm?

These truly are interesting times. Scary as hell, but interesting.

61. Yep...
In Austin they have setup smoking and open fire bans in all parks and Greenbelts. ACL is this weekend and there is a serious concern there will be those smokers who will not be able to resist the urge and will end up sparking a fire. Given that ACL is in Zilker Park which serves as the lynch pin to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, there is serious concern any fire will cause severe damage to a rather dense urban community. (Not to mention the safety issue of 20+ thousand concert goers who will have limited exit capacity if a fire is aggressive.)

62. Watering rules may get stricter next week
The North Texas Water authorities are going to vote (or whatever it is that they do) to make stricter changes since area lakes, etc.. are so, so low. Once they pass it then local communities/city councils have to pass it. People would be allowed to water their lawns once every two weeks, restaurants would only serve water if the customer asks for it.
While we are all happy the temps are now in the 70's and 80's, the bigger picture is we are still very much in a disaster drought-wise. The most we are seeing in the upcoming forecast are words like "scattered" and "isolated" when they talk about rain...which is our weather people's way of saying 99% of you won't get shit and the other 1% may see a few sprinkles on your windshields.
