Michael Moore, Elisabeth Hasselbeck clash on ‘The View’
Source: RawReplay
By Stephen C. Webster

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the lone conservative co-host of ABC’s women’s talk show “The View,” took the untypical position of defending President Barack Obama, specifically saying that he made the right decision to order the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

Moore, who’s previously argued that the U.S. “lost something of our soul” in that raid, wasn’t buying it.

“The way we show the world that we’re difference is that we give even the most heinous person their day in court,” Moore said. “If we lose sight of that basic American principle — we put the Nazis on trial, we put Manson on trial.”

He added: “If we start to say that we’re afraid to hold trials because terrorists might hurt us, we look like a bunch of wusses.”

This video is from ABC, broadcast Sept. 14, 2011

1. A battle of wits with an unarmed person
Moore should be ashamed!

Oh come on, you know someone is going to say it, but at least I'm being sarcastic.

2. Yeah, but Michael Moore is fat; Elizabeth Hasselbeck is pretty. Sort of.
Thus, Hasselbeck wins. :sarcasm:

4. What soul is that? The one that...
opened the western territories by exterminating Indians.

Or the one that used the Marines to make Central America safe for United Fruit?

Or maybe the one that displaced governments in Africa and South America to make the world safe for our version of democracy?

Or the one that invaded Iraq?

Although it would have been better to bring him to trial, killing bin Laden is a footnote to that history and bringing him to trial would have been highly unlikely anyway.

Come on-- none of that made us really bad guys in the grand scheme of things, just another powerful country stepping over the line at times. Not nearly as bad as Imperial Japan, the Belgians, or Ghengis Kahn. And don't even THINK of putting us in the same group with Mao, Hitler and Stalin. After all is said and done, we're often as not pretty good guys.

But, governments are human inventions, and like all human inventions it too often falls prey to hubris and stupidity. Even our government.

So, shut up, Michael.

6. Rightwingers don't care about the Constitution, they don't understand
it. Mike was trying to teach someone who cannot comprehend the reasons why we have a rule of law with supposedly no exceptions. Had she been around when the Constitution was being written, she would have made a fool of herself then as she does now. Hypocrite, she will no doubt boast about what a 'great country' this is, a shining light to the rest of the world though, even though she believes that some people do not deserve trials. She thinks the trial is only about the person. But then, sadly, she is not alone in that, and it isn't only the right anymore.

Good for MM, at least he said what needed to be said and hopefully more intelligent people than a partisan tool, understood.

9. Love MM, but I wish he had been bold enough to challenge the fallacy at the heart of the matter
The "fact" of Bin Laden's guilt. Moore and everyone else should point out that without a trial, all we have is a lying government's word. Whenever I hear the righteous barking that the accused doesn't deserve a trial, I fear for all of our futures, and am reminded just how easily controlled we are.

14. THANK YOU for pointing that out.
Absolutely! One of the biggest massacres of mankind in modern history and we never brought him to trial. We'll never know, beyond a doubt, what truly happened. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. Not while this country still stands.

WE ARE AFRAID OF THE TRUTH UBL MIGHT TELL ON THE STAND
That UBL wasn't behind the attack on the WTC on 9/11. He's already refused to take credit for it. Bush and his guys made sure it would happen. Not sure how, but it was too well co-ordinated to have been engineered by a dialysis-dependent madman living in a cave somewhere in the mountains of Afghanistan.

THIS is why UBL got no trial. God help the powers that be if that little morsel of truth actually escaped to a wider audience.

13. Short of OBL walking into NYC police HQ with hands up...
we had to go in assuming the worst. This means booby traps and armed children. We did what was reasonable and ethical. Just like a bank robber who has killed 10 hostages and has his gun to the head of another, you do not walk in and give him a chance to put down his gun. You use a snipper and aim for the head.

15. Yeah, because BUSH and his cronies were so believable, right?
When they said they had their man, they were to be believed, right? I mean, they cut funds for fighting terrorism right when they got into power, left us completely vulnerable in the airspace surrounding the Pentagon (this is some of THE most heavily protected airspace in the world, by the way), and conducted training sessions in the airspace around New York the very day that those planes flew into those towers. How that is NOT allowing this to happen, I don't know, but we're supposed to believe that they pinpointed the culprit within 24 hours of the attack?

Meh. I don't think so.

17. What a load of shit.
We carpet bomb whole countries, kill scores of innocents - sometimes for kicks as the wikileaks tape shows - and all we hear about is booby traps and armed children from Americans who have been driven out of their minds with fear.

19. Now, now, you don't know
Heck, Bin Laden might have sprouted wings and grown fangs! What would you have done then, smart guy? Huh? Too late to bring your snipper to bear, and you're about to become a Mooslim Terraist Zombie! Aaaaahhhh!!!

Well, it could happen like that.

23. But we didn't use a sniper with a headshot, did we?
Instead we stormed a house and shot non-combatant women in the process.

20. Lis needs to learn that even the FBI didn't want OBL for 9/11

USAMA BIN LADEN

Murder of U.S. Nationals Outside the United States; Conspiracy to Murder U.S. Nationals Outside the United States; Attack on a Federal Facility Resulting in Death

REWARD: The Rewards For Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to $25 million for information leading directly to the apprehension or conviction of Usama Bin Laden. An additional $2 million is being offered through a program developed and funded by the Airline Pilots Association and the Air Transport Association.

Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world.

Bin Laden is the leader of a terrorist organization known as Al-Qaeda, "The Base". He is left-handed and walks with a cane.

And she needs to learn that Bush didn't do anything when told of the 9/11 attacks not because he didn't want to "scare the children," but because he didn't know what to do...or was told to sit there and do nothing.

22. Nonsense. Statements of Osama's culpability in the September 11 attacks are all over the FBI
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 04:46 PM by NYC Liberal
website. Your link was last updated in November 2001.

The reason the September 11 attacks are not listed on Osama's poster is right at the bottom of the page: "The alleged terrorists on this list have been indicted by sitting Federal Grand Juries in various jurisdictions in the United States for the crimes reflected on their wanted posters."

The posters list only the crimes for which the person has actually been indicted by a grand jury.

21. We didn't have a strong case showing Bin Laden was responsible.
His happiness about it on video tape in no way proves he planned it.

Of course, I think he was responsible.

But did the US have a slam-dunk case in terms of guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt?

No way.

Moore is right--assassination is the easy and WRONG way to do it, but still in the great scheme of things, it's good Bin Laden is gone.
