... who can accompany my transgender friend and fellow DU'er, who has been knocked-on-her-ass sick for over a week, somewhere to get some medical treatment?

She visited the ED at Mercy hospital the day before yesterday. She has insurance. They didn't do anything, even though she was in a lot of pain. When she asked a nurse to lay the gurney flat, she was told "this isn't a hotel."

In my experiences with her when we lived in the same city, I learned a lot about how transgender people are generally treated in our culture -- 'sub-ni**er' might be an appropriate word for it.

I'm afraid she might need an advocate. I'd go myself, but I am too far away. I'd ask the LGB...(t) center for help, but I've seen first-hand how small that (t) is.

It's a place specifically for nice posts and non-political. The people who visit the lounge are among the kind ones in DU. We all go there for a respite. There are a few people who I'm thinking will respond to you. I know they will because they have many times.

Please go there and post this. Just introduce yourself and tell your story. Post don't sink fast in the Lounge either.

Has she tried the Family Health Clinics organization? They're a bit more accepting.

The only real issue is that they don't have an emergency room.
As for emergency rooms, a lot of the time it depends on the staff at the time the patient comes in. And I'm very surprised about the lack of care at Mercy, being in Hillcrest - if Mercy didn't do anything beyond triage, then she's got a possible lawsuit.
I have seen transgenders get excellent service at the Scripps 4th St. Urgent Care, but again, in the middle of the night, your only options are the emergency rooms. :(

...family health ctr is her primary care clinic. In her present condition she just can't do 6-8 hours in their waiting room. UCSD might be the place.
