Cows' milk may cause ENT problems

Persistent ear, nose, and throat (ENT) problems in babies and toddlers could be related to food allergies, and in particular to cow's milk protein, researchers said this week in San Francisco at the Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF).

Conditions such as refractory otitis media or oropharyngeal dysphagia often improve if the children are put on elimination diets, said Dr Angela Paddack from the University Of Arkansas School Of Medicine in Little Rock.

"Food hypersensitivity is a pretty common diagnosis. These kids have gastrointestinal issues, but a subset has ENT conditions, and they do not improve with standard reflux therapy," Dr Paddack told Reuters Health. "These kids will improve when you put them on an elimination diet to rule out cow's milk protein allergy."

Elimination diet

She and her colleagues did a chart review on 101 youngsters with suspected cow's milk protein allergy who had been seen in gastroenterology and otolaryngology clinics.

2. Gosh--people who are allergic to milk shouldn't drink it. I'm shocked.
I thought you were supposed to drink more of things you were allergic to.

So much for my weekly ragweed baths.

3. My daughter was allergic to cows and soy as a baby
Fortuntely, I nursed her but she had a reaction when I myself had dairy or soy products. Even today as an adult she still has reactions to them. No, Lactaid doesn't help. Want to know what she can tolerate? GOATS MILK. I was told to try this when she was a toddler by her doctor. Today you can buy goats milk and cheese products in most supermarkets. I later learned that goats, not cows, is more similar to human milk. Strange, but must be true, at least for my daughter.

4. When I first tried soy 20 years ago, my first free association thought was
"Ugh! Baby formula!"

I immediately asked my mother if I was fed soy formula as an infant. She responded that she had to switch me to soy when I was three months old b/c of mastitis issues. Even though I didn't know the verbiage for formula, I knew what it was upon revisiting it.

5. When I was a baby I was allergic to cow's milk and had to have
goat's milk...so my parents bought a goat. I don't know who milked it! lol
Unfortunately, it was killed when it was chained to a metal fence which was hit by lightening.

8. Surprise! Cows milk suitable for cows,
human milk suitable for humans! Who would have thought?

Many people have varying degrees of sensitivity to the protein in cows' milk. This is why Lactaid does not help them. Lactaid addresses the problem that many people have digesting the carbohydrate in cows' milk, lactose.
