Sarah Palin Learns the Web Has No Undo Feature
from Advertising Age:

Sometimes you make a mistake in the digital realm and you need to fix it. But once something is out on the Web and in social networks, you cannot erase it. Instead, you must apologize and move on.

...snip...

As Erik Sherman shows in this BNET article, Palin wishes she could take back some parts of her Web site takebackthe20.com. Her people had chosen the unfortunate metaphor of crosshairs on a map to indicate congresspeople to be targeted in the recent congressional elections. Now of course, they didn't mean literally targeted, but this looked pretty bad after the shootings. So they wanted to press the undo button.

The site's been taken down, but Google never forgets, so it's still in the Google cache. They said the marks were "surveyor's marks" rather than crosshairs. Hmm. The map was up on her Facebook page. It still is. That's where I got it.

The fact that this story has moved beyond the political audience into business publications suggests that actual damage to the Palin "brand" may be more substantial than we think. Say what you will about her bomb-throwing language: are businesses going to want to get behind a candidate this incompetent?

1. Just like video and reporter's pencils.
And I'm highly skeptical of "Learns."

2. I think crosshairs vs surveyors marks
is just a matter of semantics. The graphic may have been pulled from a library of surveying marks, but it still looks like a crosshair to me

5. Taken out of context, to me they look exactly like ...
... graphic design registration marks.

In the context however, they can't be mistaken for anything except a target.

8. Yes
and most people have seen what crosshairs look like from tv or whatever but I think most have never seen what surveyor's marks look like. So the first thing you think of when you see her "map" is crosshairs.

9. I guess whoever picked that particular specific image
knew that deniability would be important later

7. Apparently, there's a YouTube video of her FB page scrubbing negative
comments as quickly they come in, by her crew of flunkies! Lawrence O'Donnell was showing it last night.
