ABC reporter makes a real boneheaded mistake.
Showing the big satellite that is going to fall to Earth, the reporter said the satellite would mostly burn up once it hit the band of heat around the Earth.

WRONG, dummy! It'll mostly burn up due to atmospheric friction! :eyes:

2. LOL..."The Band Of Heat". I played for them in the 70's.
I heated up mostly the lower-middle, though.

10. I caught that, too.
Well, yes and no. The "Thermosphere" in the upper atmosphere actually has gases that heat to incredibly hot temps -- up to something like 4,000 degrees F, if memory serves me. However, the gas is so spread out in the near vacuum that it can't really transfer heat effectively. Kind of a weird paradox.

But yes, I thought the reporter's comments were sort of indicative of poor research. Things mostly burn up in the Mesosphere, the layer below the hotter "Thermosphere", and a layer which is characterized by being the coldest part of the atmosphere in both real and perceivable terms.

and someone said we can't live on Mars because of all the hot gasses.

Laughed my ass off at that one. I think lots of people think space is hot.

I sat there and said, "What band of heat?"
I'm glad someone else pointed this out.
