White guy shooting = "Crazy,"... but brown guy shooting = "Terrorist?"
Jared Lee Loughner allegedly tried to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at a meeting with constituents in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday. In the wake of the attack, the 22-year-old Loughner has been called everything from “crazed” to “unhinged.” What he’s not been called, however, at least by the media, is a terrorist.

8. Crazy or Terrorist.
You make an excellent point. At this time I believe that Jared shot Gabrielle for political reasons. He planned it, committed it and he is trying to create the impression that he is crazy. That police photo appears too contrived.

19. Why shoot a congresswoman
if not for political reasons? The fact that he may be unhinged doesn't change the fact that what he did was an attempted assassination.

14. At this point he is not as clearly religiously or politically motivated as the last mass killer
Major Nidal Hassan, who killed all those people at Fort Hood, may have been crazy but he had been in touch with a known terrorist, Al-Awlaki. Hassan had expressed the same rationale, no matter how 'warped' it is, which is cited by other 'terrorists'.

We don't yet know much about Loughner. People who knew him say he behaved like a crazy person. Did he even have a job, for instance?

People who knew Hassan, for instance, said he was 'extremely religious and he expressed that within an accepted context before he went on his killing spree.

15. I call B.S.
I initially thought him more of a political terrorist, but after seeing the reports of his crazy ass behavior and posting...well, he is crazy.

If a "brown guy" had the same insane behavior patterns and postings, he'd be crazy too.

18. Easy to Forget
It's easy to forget (and I am NOT justifying this child-killing bastard assassin in the slightest) that there are crazy people among us ALL the time. It is perhaps easier to think of any killer of a political figure as politically motivated. But with all we know about this Loughner, he reminds me more of the undifferentiated crazy hate-filled loonies I heard on Sproul Plaza at Berkeley in 1971-1975 than a RW tool. Even though we would all love to blame the RW hate-mongers for this nonentity, it seems like a stretch to put a race edge to it.

It's also so much more comfortable to put a political edge on it, rather than admit the guy behind you in line at the grocery store might be harboring thoughts like Loughner, McVey, Kaczinski. Isn't it?

20. Joseph Stack was just as bad
After reading comments from people that Stack was "rightfully upset" and just needed "understanding," I almost threw up. Even members of Congress gave him far too much leeway for the act of cowardice and yes, terrorism that he committed.

The double standard is obvious and has existed for as long as this country has.
