there is a strike in the offing for the Supermarkets, RALPHS. VONS and Albertsons. From talking to the cashier as I got my supplies for a couple of weeks... yes it looks like it is going to go off.
Oh and please, please do not cross the lines (though it looks like they will close the stores, and it might be not enough scabs)... unless you absolutely have to. There are a few valid reasons... such as lack of transport or handicapped But otherwise... COSTCO, Trader Joes, Henry's and Bodegas... please support the strike.
And yes this is nooz actually.

1. The last time there was a strike, |
|
at least while I was in CA ('04?) I was careful not to cross the lines. I walked with them a few times, delivered some water and snacks...
and started checking out the local alternatives for groceries.
I somehow forgot to go back when the strike ended; I still rarely shop at Ralphs, Vons, or Albertsons.
Of course, now that I no longer live in CA, I don't have Vons or Ralphs, anyway.
From a thousand miles away, I'll stay away from Albertson's.

2. Henry's Farmer's Market is now Sprouts Farmer's Market... |
|
...they merged - it's the 'mercan way, ya know.
I stopped going to Ralph's Vons, and Albertsons several years ago, at the beginning of the last big strike.
Haven't gone back to any of them since.

...the Henry's in Monrovia became a Sprouts.
With all of the same employees, and some new ones I had not seen before.
One of the employees told me they had merged with Sprouts, but they roll with the Sprouts Brand, not Henry's.
There is a preexisting Sprouts (iow, never a Henry's) not far away from Monrovia (east side of Pasadena) from the former Henry's/now Sprouts.
They both came into existence within just the last 2 or so years ago.
Confusing, huh?

4. I generally shop at Ralph's, plus Costco... |
|
I will NOT cross the picket line, if they have one...
I asked one of the checkers a few weeks back about Ralph's other store...Food for Less. The checker told me that they are now unionized, but their contract is not being negotiated now.
I'll probably give them a try.
Thanks for the heads-up!

8. You welcome, food for less is |
|
a lower tier market, meant for a different population and you get to self bag.
I have used them from time to time. Dopey me I assumed that if Ralphs goes, so does food for less

12. A Von's cashier told me today that they want to raise their |
|
medical deductible from $1500 to $3000 and no raises for TWO damn years. Although my bank has a little branch in Von's, I will under no circumstances cross their picket line. I belonged to a union for 30 yrs and this is important for all of us. Please, please do not cross their lines under any circumstances. I hope they do close their stores; that'll make it really easy for everyone to honor these wonderful employees. The cashier did say that normally Von's is a good company to work for.

when I told them I would not cross the lines...
We are union.
But I know of ONE person where I live that crossing that line would be necessary... it is disability related... they understand.
And no, she is too proud to let me go get her stuff... or I would do it gladly.

|
I usually get them filled at a Savon inside Albertsons. There's a Trader Joes across the street from Albertsons. So I'm all set for food and meds.
Sure hope they don't stay out long.

I expect to be able to do the same this time. Some people have even suggested that I, being unemployed for 16 months, put in application for a scab job at the supermaket. Screw that; things need to be pushed in the opposite direction. I hope they do have to close down.

all Ralphs will close and some Albertsons will close, some will stay open. Of course you would still have to cross a picket line to get into Vons.
