Repub Gohmert says carrying guns in the Capital building will avert duels...
GOHMERT: Now, on the other end, more freedoms may be of assistance. Like, members of Congress, a number of people have said they walk home at night, they have no security that follows them home. And up here in Washington, DC, because there’s a gun ban, besides law enforcement, the only people who have guns here are the criminals! So we’re looking at a bill that would allow members of Congress to carry a weapon. <...>

But I’ll take you back a couple of hundred years when part of public life and part of public office was if you said something that offended somebody, there was going to be a duel and somebody was going to be killed! That’s what happened with Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. So, we’ve come a long way since those days and we just don’t need to be reverting backwards.

1. Heck, I have no problem with congresspersons carrying guns. They can't be any worse than
cops...

2. Jean Schmidt, too?
There are some batshit crazy people in congress that shouldn't have a weapon within reach.

6. I'm only interested in passing bills that "promote the general Welfare" and repealing bills
that "promote the corporate Welfare".

I have several friends who were killed in Iraq/Afghanistan and others who's lives are destroyed.

A trooper's life in Afghanistan/Iraq is worth no less than any congress critter.

I care not about congresspersons, only about those who gave their all for an experiment.

The most successful, longest running attempt at government to see whether a society composed of so many diverse cultural groups can find ways to live together without killing each other.

As Forrest Gump said "That's all I have to say about that."

8. Well, I really can't support this whole "averting duels" in Congress thing.
Just think of how many more of our fellow citizens would start paying attention to the work of our Congress if they knew there was a chance that on any given day, one legislator might step up and slap a glove across the face of another one and challenge him to a duel!

CSPAN ratings would go through the roof!

I say, for the sake of Democracy, bring on the duels!
