Woman still missing after Reno Air Show crash
A Lenexa woman is still missing and her husband, two sons and daughter-in-law all remain hospitalized after the Reno, Nev., air show crash Friday which killed at least nine people.

Cherie Elvin was at the air show but has yet to be found since the accident. Her husband, Chuck Elvin, was being treated Sunday at Renown Medical Center. They are both in their 70s. Their sons Bill Elvin and Brian Elvin, who both live in Overland Park, were also being treated at the hospital Sunday. Brian’s wife, Linda, was under care at another hospital in the Reno area.

An annual trip to the Reno Air Races had become an Elvin family tradition.

On Friday, a 74-year-old pilot in the cockpit of a World War II-era P-51 Mustang apparently lost control of the aircraft and plunged into the ground about 65 feet from a grandstand where thousands were watching. The impact left a crater 3 feet deep and 8 feet across in the tarmac.

1. either she's
at another hospital or I can't even imagine the other. I hope they're able to find her.

2. doesn't sound good
:-(

I have been hearing rumors that there were spectators killed on scene at the crash site that haven't yet been counted in the official death toll

hope it's not true

3. I hope she wasn't that half a torso on the tarmac
that the raw footage showed. I had thought that was probably part of the pilot at the time.

I think either this lady is at another hospital or she's totally traumatized and secluded at a local motel, unable to talk about who she is.

6. It could have been worse than cut in half
As they correctly said - it was mass trauma - people were cut up real bad - see the lengthy thread.

9. No thanks
That raw footage was bad enough.

That whole end of the stands was sprayed with high velocity wreckage. I understand there were a lot of amputations. The dead might be the lucky ones.

10. Isn't that the truth
Nothing would make me attend one of those shows.

8. Surprised me too. A poster suggested perhaps the pilot had lightened
the fuel load to gain more speed (to win the race) and didn't figure correctly...

13. Since it's an air race, the plane had just enough fuel to do the race
and the crash made the remaining fuel disperse and vaporize...There wasn't a high enough concentration to ignite...

As bad as it was, the whole thing could have even been worse...

7. Another missing and another of the deceased identified
Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 07:05 PM by Cerridwen
2:45 p.m., update: One member of the Cascade Warbirds has been confirmed dead while another is missing. George Hewitt, 60, was confirmed as one of the nine people who died in Friday's crash at the Reno Air Races, said Dave Desmon, executive director of the Warbirds. His wife Wendy, 56 is missing, Desmon said.

The group, which is dedicated to preserving and displaying vintage aircraft, has been attending the air races for years and has two boxes by the start-finish line.

Desmon didn't know how many members of the group, based in Washington State, attended the Air Races this year. All other members were accounted for, he said.

11. I was going to post about that
It was on CBC this morning - George Hewitt apparently is Canadian and was an Air Canada pilot for many years. They mentioned his wife was still missing (they mentioned she might be presumed dead as she was sitting with him). So according to this thread that's at least 2 that are still completely missing. :(

12. One of the witnesses sitting 50 ft. from the boxes
said " bodies literally disintegrated before my eyes."

I don't recall his name but he was identified as the

person that invented Java.
