Could A $5 Catalogue Save America's Oldest Seed Company?
http://www.facebook.com/motherearthnewsmag
Landreth Seed Co, the country's oldest seed company (established in 1784), is in danger of closing. You can help keep this wonderful supplier of heirloom, non-GMO seeds alive by purchasing one of the company's catalogs for $5. Get more information on Landreth's financial situation at the link below, and place your catalog order here: http://goo.gl/Luysx.

I got an extra $5...how about you?

34. The seeds should last for about a year in a cool, dark, dry location -
And if you live in a climate that supports it (like California), you might want to start some veggie and flower sets in peat moss around January/February so you can plant in the ground after the last frosts and stagger planting them throughout the growing season so that you have them almost year round.
Seed packs are usually good for 50 to 100 plants - or an entire planting bed (usually a 20 x 5 ft space), so if you don't think you'll need a whole lot of veggies at once, (or plan to sell at the farmer's markets) staggering them over three plantings a year is usually enough for a supplementary or subsistence garden.

I used to stagger plant with lettuce, carrots, onions, peas and other "one time use" plants, plants that die off quickly (like peas and beans), or root veggies.
I need to get back into pickling and canning...

35. Thanks for the Info
Unfortunately we're way up in Northern Illinois, almost Wisconsin, and even though we're out in the boonies we still have a small yard so it's good to know they will last. I think I will look up how to build a good seed box to keep in the basement which will also keep out the humidity. Thanks again!

32. Nice container selection -
Since we still rent, container gardens are a must; one never knows when one will have to move.
I'll get a catalog and a couple seed packs to start for next year's garden.

And the early African American seed sets look intriguing - we have a large African immigrant community around the area, and have tried many different restaurants - many of those plants look to be capable of helping me reproduce some of the tastes when cooking at home. If I owned my own place with a large yard, there will be a section for international vegetables and herbs.

33. Done!
I also ordered a gift certificate for my son with a green thumb.

I also left a note with the order telling the company that I learned of their situation on Democratic Underground and it prompted me to place an order;)
