"By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over." -- Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) I read that and you know, I think we can help this family.
I plan on sending the congressman some friendly tips on how to save on a food bill. You know send him pointers how I scrimp and save in this economy.
I will send him Mom's Depression recipe of "SHIT ON A SHINGLE" its cheap and filling, takes little preparation time. He does it right he can pick up the hamburger at 'the meat markdown bin'.
Maybe tell him about the concept of COUPONS? Give him some pointers how to save money...you know what we have been doing for YEARS NOW!

I am going to send him this tip.

Give the notion some publicity - maybe it would go viral, and make of him the public laughing stock he so well deserves.

10. I suggest members of Congress should be compensated at the minimum wage. |
|
In doing so, our Representatives and Senators would quickly find the impetus for finding myriad ways for improving the national economy.
As for Mr. Fleming, he'll be surprised at how much value there really is in the dollar value menu at McDonald's. Burgers. Fries. A nice soft drink. Pretty soon, he'll be watching his waist line along with the rest of us.

14. I'll send him my mother's slumgullion recipe |
|
and let him know that Tuesday and Thursday are the best days to find burger in the markdown bin, but he'd better get to the store before 9 AM to do it.
He can make half a pound of burger feed 6 people well and 8 people with sides like day old bread (more like week old bread now that it's full of preservatives and trans fats).
I'll also send him my own Depression Coffee recipe. It won't give that caffeine jolt but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and will fool your tastebuds into waking you up for the day.
Maybe I'll send his wife one of the darning eggs I inherited. There's no reason for the poor baby to go around with holes in his socks the way Wolfowitz did. Some really minor effort can repair his clothes just like new, no need for the poor thing to go around in rags no matter how little he has left over from that $600,000 he takes in.
I mean, honestly, we do need to help each other out in tough times, right?

20. Get to the store early enough so the day old bread |
|
mark downs are still semi soft. But if he cant make it, and gets the hard crumbly bread, he can toss a damp dish towel over it and Nuke it for a few seconds, comes right out of the microwave like fresh oven baked bread for a few minutes, the SOS will soften it to where you can chew it.

I wonder if your slumgullion is the same as my mother's Mess --- ground beef and macaroni noodles with tomato sauce?
Uh oh, though, rumor has it that ground beef will soon be so high no one can afford it.
Seriously, I would like your depression coffee recipe. :hi:

34. My Depression coffee came about by accident |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 02:46 PM by Warpy
I was drying some soaked garbanzo beans in an oven for crunchies and spaced them. Since the dark brown beans smelled a lot like coffee, I ground them up and brewed them. I'm not a coffee hound, but my ex said it tasted better than any substitute on the market. It became the caffeine free standard for his late night coffee. Later I found out Depression Coffee was usually navy beans or great northern beans. Garbanzos just worked better.
Just watch them carefully, they can go from dark brown to black very quickly and black isn't good.
Slumgullion is the name for any watery or brothy chopped meat stew stretched by serving it with starch, lots and lots of starch. My mother's used Campbell's tomato soup and was seasoned with curry.

(No lousy, measly $400,000 hanging around here with nothing to do after my friends buy me groceries.)
How could any sane person, knowing that he lives in a country where people are losing their homes and their wages, make such a "woe-is-me" statement?
How callous can you get?
