Mother, daughter reportedly shot outside Georgia private school
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44592441/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

A mom and her 10-year-old daughter were shot outside a private, religious school south of Atlanta, authorities said Tuesday.

Sgt. Jodi Shupe told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the two victims were rushed to different hospitals after the incident, which occurred at around 6:30 a.m. ET.

Shupe said the woman was dropping her daughter off at Little Mountain Christian Academy in Rockdale County when her husband approached them and began shooting, the Journal-Constitution reported. The woman reportedly ran inside the school and screamed for help.

The husband was at large, Shupe said according to the Journal-Constitution.

1. This is so sad.
How did we know it would be Daddy? I hope that these two brave people survive and find the strength to leave their abuser!

4. Domestic abuse settled by guns
My younger sister was killed by her husband. He was a drunken, abusive person and she was very close to getting her divorce when he decided to take matters into his gun toting hands. Shot her in the back, twice, the coward. In front of the children. The boy, who turned 11 on that day, called police and stopped a family massacre. Instead, the a-hole shot himself.

Nearly 10 years later, we (DH & I got custody and eventually adopted the 2 children) are still picking up the pieces of that tragedy.

I long for rational folks to take up reasonable gun policy and maybe (in my fantasy world) when domestic abuse is reported or suspected or a divorce is proceeding, guns must be surrendered.

6. Wow! I am so sorry for your loss. That is awful.
I often think about what happens to the surviving family members of these types of crimes and cannot imagine how anyone can move on. I hope the children are okay.

7. There are no words...

Your nephew's father killed his mother on the nephew's birthday?

That level of hatred is hard to imagine.

10. We all bear scars
They are now my son & daughter, via adoption.

The boy, in spite of year of counseling and working through the grief, horror, loss, etc. with professionals, has never recovered. I put his mental illness down to the 11 years he spent with monster/dad. He took off 6 days after his 18th birthday and goes from one minimum wage job to another, projecting all his issues onto DH & me.

The girl copes better, but is not completely healed, as one would expect. She was just 6 1/2 when the murder/suicide happened. She looks exactly like my sister (her birth mother) and the rest of my family can't cope with it, often breaking down & crying in her presence. We limit our visits to my side of the family for that reason, it is just so painful. I have the same issue from time to time, especially on special days and times. I am struck by the thought "This SHOULD NOT be my place, my sister should be here" on birthdays, holidays, first day of school, awards ceremonies, etc.

9. Mmhmm....
Reminds me of the folks who want nets built on the Golden Gate bridge because their kid jumped off it.

"If only it hadn't been there to taunt them..."

Never mind that there is another bridge and dozen other ways to kill yourself. The same thing applies here. Government confiscation of firearms would not have saved your sister sadly.

11. I hear you
I wish that someone in his family could have "talked him down". I wish one of the several times he was caught for drunk driving that he'd been put away. "If only..." & "what if..." become a common refrain after something like this happens, I'm afraid.

My sister also should have been less reluctant to reach out for help and report him to the police. We (her siblings and mother)did not even know of the abuse until a year before the shooting.

13. bad shit...
Sorry for your loss.

My cousin's daughter was killed by a shotgun blast to the face, delivered by her mothers boyfriend. She left behind a daughter.
