I just quit Facebook because they abuse users
Facebook has changed again,

1) taking over control of what is important to you

2) employing profile pictures to advertise Wal*Mart and other things people have liked.

I don't want a corporation using the different "Likes" I make to run ads for clients.
My friends and I did not join or use Facebook to become unwitting stooges for corporatism!

Deactivate your account now and give em hell!

35. I never have Liked Mall*Wart, but a Friend did, and now her photo is repeatedly on top the list
of "recent" posts, placed there as an ad and out of the actual chronology of posts.
She does not even know that her photo was a Wal*Mart ad in my Facebook view.
She just likes the price of cookies, or something, and did not sign with Wal*Mart to be a spokesperson.

That kind of mechanism is useful for content algorithms.
Using Friend profile photos for ads is not cool.

I never clicked on the updates, or opened that email that was sent. I only open the emails that say somebody replied to a post I made. I have also never posted any pictures.

I have always been very wary of "updates", for anything.

Advertising is the price we pay for free or reduced rate services.

I like facebook in general -- except the constant changes are annoying.

I won't be deactivating because of their advertising business model.

23. The changes do stink, but
I still like FB in general too (as someone else posted above me).

Keeping up with friends and family is easy and convenient. It's all in one place.

And "giving them hell" by deactivating my account isn't going to hurt them one bit. There will always be new people joining up who have never known the way it used to be, so the new format won't be annoying to them.

Not to mention that the only connection I have left with my brother who passed away in Feb. is his facebook page, which I requested be memorialized. I'm not going to give that up by quitting facebook.

28. Not for me, it's not.
Like Facebook, DU works the way it's owners choose to make it work. On DU, if you contribute money to keep the site running, you don't have to see those ads. That's how DU works. Facebook works the way it's designed, too. Much of it, you can control. What you cannot control, you either ignore or enjoy or you leave the site.

Every site that is interactive is a business of some kind. Patronize it or don't patronize it. Work with its structure or go somewhere else. You can also complain about features that bother you, but you can't control the decisions the owners make.

26. I never "like" anything having to do with a corporation.
Facebook is what you make it. If you "like" stuff, you've agreed to let Facebook and the "stuff" to use that information. Read things. See what you're doing.

Facebook is what it is. It is not yours. It belongs to a company. If you understand how it works, you can control it to give you what you want. If you ignore how it works, you will get the results Facebook wants. It's very simple.

If you don't like Facebook, you can leave Facebook. Thus it is in the real world. I don't like where the gasoline filler door is on one of my cars. It is what it is.

31. No. Why would I do that?
If I like a band, I buy its music. If I like a movie, I tell my friends. What does "liking" something on Facebook do for me? I'm on Facebook to keep in touch with friends and associates. That's the only reason I'm there. "Liking" stuff on Facebook isn't one of my deals. I can't see how it improves my life in any way.

If you "like" stuff on Facebook, that's your deal. I don't care. But Facebook is designed to make money by publicizing what you like. If you want to contribute in that way to Facebook, be my guest. Since you're not on my friends list there, it has no effect whatsoever on me. If a Facebook "friend" of mine starts "liking" everything, they soon get hidden.

33. Just wondering. A lot of people like to shake their fists in the air and rage about corporations
yet they support (in one way or another) bands and movies they love, as if the music and movie industries are small indie outfits or something, when they're nothing of the sort.

It's especially funny watching people like Michael Stipe of REM, or Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam whine about "corporatism." LOL

34. If you don't like their new 'top stories' feature, here's how to get around it.
And yes, I said 'get around' it because there's no way to disable it.

Create a custom list, add those of your friends and pages that you haven't hidden from your news feed, and go to the options under 'Manage List' -> 'Updates to Show' and check all items. Does away with this 'top story' business.

Because, yeah, it's way more important to see someone commenting on what the weather was like two days ago than to find out what my friends are up to right now.

Just installed "Stylish" as recommended about and it seems to do the trick.

43. Un-rec for more useless Facebook whining
If you up your info to them, don't be surprised if they use it in exactly the way their TOS says they're going to use it. If you post your phone number, your address, your e-mail, you're just plain stupid. It's a NETWORKING site. Look up what "networking" means. I don't begrudge anyone for "leaving" FB (but again, check the TOS...you can't actually leave right away), but to complain that you're being abused by something you voluntarily signed up for is just silly. OnStar's announcement today, that it will track your speed and location, and then sell the information, even if you don't use the OnStar service, is far more insidious. At least once you are finally allowed to leave FB, you're actually done with them.
