I don't Thank president Obama for signing DADT repeal. |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 05:46 PM by xchrom
He made the process a circus & people like dan choi had to suffer so he could hide behind others to get to the end.
He is incapable of coming out in front w/ the DOJ & do the right thing straight up.
I do thank the lgbtiq service people who sacrificed their careers.
Straight people in positions of real power making a political circus - not so much.

Had he done what you suggest it could have been easily overturned by the next team.
You got what you wanted, and still you ___________.
That you didn't get it in the imperfect way you want is more telling of you than of Obama.

The law only got rid of DADT it didn't institute a right for gays to serve. The rule that will allow gays to serve will be made by Obama.

Gays have been allowed to serve for a very long time, as long as they DADT. I'm not sure what you mean by this, but would appreciate the edification.

24. All that was done was the removal of DADT |
|
the sodomy law, the constitutionality of which hasn't been adjudicated, still exists. In addition, DADT was replaced by no language at all in regards to gays serving. All of the rules that will allow us to serve will be all executive orders or regulations. They could be replaced by rules stating we aren't permitted to serve at all.

The chance of getting traction on this is nil. Perry and Bachman will obviously be painful memories in the very near future. Only a very small amount of TeaBaggers will support them... and the TeaBaggers are on their way to memory lane as well.

think Bush the elder on abortion. He always went out of his way to prove his bonafides on that issue and Romney will feel the need to do the same. I do realize that it would be hard on some level to put the tooth paste back in the tube. But I would feel much better with a law or legal ruling.

Fighting against the repeal in court certainly wasn't necessary.
Refusing to help campaign for the repeal among reps wasn't necessary.
Taking so much credit for the repeal when he came in at the last minute to sign on for everyone else's hard work is cheap politics.

They stripped out all the anti-discrimination language from the bill and the DOJ fought the court ruling that established a nationwide precedent that DADT was unconstitutional.
And I give, and have given, Obama props for bringing the military aboard and for signing the repeal bill.

|
Excerpt, last paragraph:
Some will rightly quibble over how long it took Obama's White House to pull off this remarkable achievement and who should get credit for what, but one thing few can argue is that repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" would not have happened without a determined President Obama, the essential and unwavering buy-in and support from our military, and an awful lot of very good luck.

Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 06:49 PM by William769
"When pushed on the issue of DADT in the spring of 2009, one of President Obama's senior aides bluntly told me, "You don't have the votes for repeal." Then, after months of careful deliberations and pressure from a wide range of interests, the President's team embarked upon a path that would make it extraordinarily difficult to get a successful repeal vote in 2010. They had solid reasons for the plan they decided on with the top military leadership, but I did not agree with their timeline.
Initially, the President did not call for Congress to repeal DADT outright as many of us had hoped; he didn't order the military to stop enforcing the law under emergency "stop-loss" powers; and he didn't want the courts to order the military to undo DADT. What he eventually proposed was far more ambitious and time consuming."

23. Do you have any recollection of how DADT came about in the first place? |
|
Clinton came into office in '93 and promised that he would repeal the ban on gays in the military with executive order. The second he did this, the right wing with the full support military brass, including the joint chiefs, waged a major PR campaign against Clinton. They painted him as an out of touch liberal, who had never served, trying to push a radical social agenda on a brave men and women in uniform. Their campaign was so successful that bipartisan congressional majorities were ready to pass a law that would override his executive order. DADT was the compromise we got out of that fiasco.
Obama, who also had never served, was faced with a similar problem. Therefore, letting Admiral Mullen and Secretary Gates be the faces of repealing DADT was an incredibly smart move, even though it took longer. Yes, Dan Choi got screwed. Yes, Obama is moving way too fucking slow on gay rights. Yes, his position on marriage equality is fucking ridiculous. But he got this one right.

I just have to laugh at the fact that 20 or 30 years from now, historians will talk about how Barack Obama ended DADT and what a victory it was for civil rights while no one, and I mean no one, will give your point of view on it a second thought. Thats what happens to a pile of shit point of view, such as yours, that is totally dishonest and wrong. History tends to ignore it because its of no significance.

There were a few court challenges to the law that the JD held at bay while REAL repeal was in the works. Then REAL repeal happened. There was no blood. Your premise that it was ever a "mess" is absolute bullshit in the first place, let alone the laughable notion that it was a mess on purpose.
Obama did it his way, which was the right way, a way that made a real change to the law and produced a permanent result, a way that future courts and future Presidents just couldn't undo at the drop of a hat. He didn't do it your way because your way would've been painfully stupid. Thats the part that bothers you. He rejected your way, did it his way and was successful at it. He won the argument. You lost the argument.

You wanted him to just let it be done with a fragile court decision. He didn't do it your way. He did it his way. And his way was superior because its more permanent. Obama's path was superior to your path and you can't stand it. Therefore you must desperately try to minimize the credit going his way in order to deal with the result in your own little mind.

...I think he got it done pretty quickly, and did it as best he could. Maybe he didn't do it *exactly* how I wanted it, but he did it, and he did it fairly well in my opinion. I can't complain.
You know, maybe doing it quietly was the best thing. Being too self-righteous may have turned off a lot of moderates. He killed it quietly and frankly, maybe it needed a quiet death.
