UPDATE: Statement from GOProud regarding GOP boo'ing gay soldier at debate

Update 2: Christopher R. Barron, Chairman of the Board and Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of gay conservative group GOProud have released a statement demanding an apology from Rick Santorum, to Stephen Hill:

(Washington, D.C.) – “Tonight, Rick Santorum disrespected our brave men and women in uniform, and he owes Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who asked him the question about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal, an immediate apology.

“That brave gay soldier is doing something Rick Santorum has never done – put his life on the line to defend our freedoms and our way of life. It is telling that Rick Santorum is so blinded by his anti-gay bigotry that he couldn’t even bring himself to thank that gay soldier for his service.

“Stephen Hill is serving our country in Iraq, fighting a war Senator Santorum says he supports. How can Senator Santorum claim to support this war if he doesn’t support the brave men and women who are fighting it?”

1. I would rather agree with GOProud than with Rick Santorum.
I'm glad that this case satisfies my preference.

23. Sickening. Anyone really surprised? Buehler? Buehler?
This really takes me back. Yes, I was a GOPer at one time, lo, these many moons ago. Then I came out of the closet. For the longest time, I tried to convince myself that Republicans weren't REALLY anti-gay. I kept hearing about "libertarianism." I kept hearing about "socially liberal, fiscally conservative." I kept hearing things like: "My liberal friends have criticized me more for being Republican than any Republican did for me being gay." Remember it was a REPUBLICAN who freed the slaves. It was the DEMOCRATS who filibustered the civil rights bills in congress. All true, but then I realized: that was then, this is now.

I tried very hard. Coming out of the closet has a way doing several things. First, not only do you reveal to the world you're gay, but metaphorically, just as being in a closet is dark and you can't see anything, coming out of a closet is light...so the light began shining in my eyes. I began to see the hogwash of what I was saying. I began to see that, no, Republicans really don't like gay people. After all, it was they who were telling me how sick I was and telling people that "this is the way 'their' lifestyle" is. And what did that lifestyle include? Well, of course, we GLBT people were child molesters; we were trying to "infiltrate" the schools to convert kids because, after all, we couldn't reproduce. The GOP's ire went way further than "personal feelings" these things were in their platform...and it just kept getting worse.

There comes a point when you have to just look at the facts and see what's going on. The FACT is the GOP of right now (and since 1964) is a cauldron of bigoted, anti-gay nut balls...WHO DON'T LIKE GAY PEOPLE. So, GOProd and Log Cabin and the Liberty Caucus, all these silly groups of delusional people who continue to try and lie to themselves as I did, are fooling themselves. More than just GLBT people, Repuglicans don't like anyone who isn't a rich, white, protestant man, and they only tolerate rich, white, protestant women. The only question to ask these groups is this: what the hell is it going to take for you to realize THEY DON'T LIKE YOU. THEY WILL NEVER LIKE YOU. THEY WANT TO SEE YOU GONE, OUT OF THEIR SIGHT OR, IF POSSIBLE, DEAD.

Directed to you sig line. How do you claim to know how 29% of DUers feel about anything? There are thousands and thousands of DUers, so how can you claim a certain percentage feel anything about anything?

call out every single one of those freaks, and the moderators, who said NOTHING about showing decency to the soldiers that they cry crocodile tears for.

NONE of those cowards did a goddamned thing about it. Jesus.

6. Because they're not a real group. They're a propaganda front.
They're designed to make it look like the Republicans have a "big tent" while being anything but.

Or so I keep hearing. You stick with the party closest to your beliefs, even if you really don't like some of what it does.

35. Not really.
I don't hate "real" progressives, although I admit to liking them more when they slather themselves in mustard and act natural. The mustard is enough to make me ignore the bogus, whiny, holier than thou attitude.

36. I meant the party higher-ups
It's just strange to me that a board that more or less sticks with the Democratic party despite loathing just about every decision actually made by that party can't seem to fathom GOProud.

16. As I said in another thread here
Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 06:48 PM by SemperEadem
that not a one of them who booed ever served a god damn day in the military or ever put their life on the line for their country in any capacity, or for anyone, not even themselves.

A bunch of doughy-bodied, ain't-never-served-a-day-in-their-miserable-life imps.

the fact that none of the candidates up there took a stand against that IN THE MOMENT tells me that they are not fit to be commander-in-chief. They ALL failed when leadership should have been displayed in that moment. That is why none of them are fit to be president.

And santorum waiting until the next day, from the safety of being in another state and half a day passing, to condemn it shows that he, too, is a coward; he is not a leader and he is not fit to occupy the office of commander-in-chief. None of them are. They are afraid of the mobs they've created with their bullshit over the past 3 1/2 years. They are afraid of lush limpballs and fux noose. The last thing this country needs is a pansy assed coward who has inhaled too much hairspray and on the high of those fumes, goes out and talks all shit about how tough they are. Tough would have been to shut that shit down in the moment. They are booing a US Military person who is laying his life on the line each and every day to assure that those assholes in the audience have the freedom to boo, which is a damn site more than what anyone booing has ever or will ever do in their lives.

I'm just stunned that these morons on that stage possess the staggering amounts of cowardice that it took to keep them riveted to their podiums with their lips sealed shut. This is how they will esteem the US Military when they become its commander-in-chief and quite frankly, IMO none of them deserve the obedience of any soldier should they make it to that office.

22. GOProud shocked that there are bigots in the republican party.
However, most sane people are shocked that any self respecting gay person would support a political party that openly promotes discrimination against gay people.
They certainly have every right to condemn Rick Santorum's homophobic behavior but it is not as if his view is an isolated one. If they really believed in fighting for gay rights, they would not belong to a party that that openly promotes bigotry.
