SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN: House Passes Funding Bill Deemed 'Dead On Arrival' In Senate
An already contentious debate over funding the government after September 30 intensified Thursday as Republicans amended their bill to be more amenable to GOP lawmakers and Democrats pledged to oppose it.

Without action by the start of the new fiscal year, the government will shut down on October 1
House Republicans passed a continuing resolution early Friday morning on a mostly partly-line vote, though the bill drew immediate criticism from Senate Democrats over its spending cut offsets for new federal disaster aid.

“The bill the House will vote on tonight is not an honest effort at compromise," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, noting that the bill is dead on arrival in the Senate. "It fails to provide the relief that our fellow Americans need as they struggle to rebuild their lives in the wake of floods, wildfires and hurricanes, and it will be rejected by the Senate."

The House added $100 million in cuts to the federal program that made the loan to the now-bankrupt solar company, Solyndra, in order to win over enough GOP votes to pass over Democratic opposition. An earlier version fo the bill failed to pass on Wednesday, dealing a blow to tha Republican leadership.

1. When you reward bullies, they tend to keep bullying.
Enough.

2. Reid told them.
He's suggesting cancelling Senate's scheduled recess. Good. If House Republicans adjourn anyway, they get and deserve every bit of voter wrath they have coming to them. They have until September 30th, but FEMA money runs out on Monday.

"The bill the House will vote on tonight is not an honest effort at compromise," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in a statement anticipating its passage. "It fails to provide the relief that our fellow Americans need as they struggle to rebuild their lives in the wake of floods, wildfires and hurricanes, and it will be rejected by the Senate."

A livid Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) told reporters Thursday night "We're fed up with this...we're sick of it, we're tired of it."

Democrats are pushing Republicans to strip the disaster aid provisions from the bill entirely and pass a clean funding bill, and separate, emergency, Senate-passed legislation to provide relief to disaster-stricken regions across the country. At her weekly press conference Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pointed to a potential compromise.

3. Again?
Just imagine how ignorant we look to other nations - let alone the lack of confidence these shenanigans cause it's own citizens. SMDH

5. The Republicans are going to use a government shutdown as a hostage before any negotiation.
They're doing the same goddamn thing they did with the debt crisis and the extension of unemployment benefits at the cost of extending the Bush Tax Cuts.

6. But...
The need to get out of town. They can't leave without a budget. If the Senate refuses to go along, the House will have no choice but to come up with another option. In the end, there may be no disaster relief but the Democrats should make it very clear who is to blame. They need to put as much pressure as possible on the Boehner and the Repubs...

7. Too "Smart" By Half...
Yes they have and will. They're stuck in teabagger mode with the talking points of tax cuts and cuts to government spending so deep into their corrupt brainstems that they'll put "ideology" over what constituents really want...results.

Any rushpublican in a district hit by this year's disasters and voted against aid may think they're some kind of "fiscal hero" at this point but they'll regret that vote (as well as their votes to eliminate SSI and Medicare) next year. The Democrats have never been handed so many good, solid issues to beat up on the rushpublicans.
