Wanda Sykes Had Breast Cancer and Double Mastectomy
Wanda Sykes has come out about having breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy earlier this year and will reportedly alk about it during an interview to air Monday Sept. 26 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. According to People, the cancer was found after she had undergone breast reduction.

"This was in February. I went for the reduction. I had real big boobs and I just got tired of knocking over stuff. Every time I eat … Oh lord. I’d carry a Tide stick everywhere I go," she quips. "My back was sore so it was time to have a reduction. It wasn't until after the reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS in my left breast. I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage-zero cancer. So I was very lucky."

Sykes, 47, has a history of breast cancer in her family, so she opted to have a bilateral mastectomy.

5. Wow....best wishes Ms. Sykes....
Nit surprising we haven't heard of this, she deserves her privacy. Now that she's publicly discussing it, it begs discussion.

She was always a funny lady, though I didn't always care for her delivery style.

I hope her discussing this will help other women get over the residual stigmas attached to this deadly disease and get the proper testing needed. Early detection is key.

Again, best wishes for a long life and happiness to Wanda. You go girl!

Detection is not the only problem. With over 50 million people across the USA who do not have health insurance (and untold millions who can't afford to use theirs due to deductibles and co-pays,) early detection has nothing to do with a cure.

"Residual stigma" has nothing to do with a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, either. It's all about bankrupting one's family.

13. I wish THIS for Wanda:
That she has insurance actually willing to pay (at least the greater part of) for her treatment so she doesn't go bankrupt!

18. AFAIK, Screen and Television Actors Guild Insurance is really good.
If you've worked at all in the last year, you're set.
