I heard this soundbite by Rick Santorum in Thursday's Fox News/YouTube Republican debate from
PBS Newshour today regarding the issue of Texas colleges having in-state tuition for ALL Texas residents regardless of citizenship status (including children whose families brought them here illegally):
JUDY WOODRUFF: Perry also had to defend himself against criticism of his relatively moderate stand on immigration, including a Texas policy granting in-state college tuition for children of illegal immigrants.
GOV. RICK PERRY: But if you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they have been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart.
JUDY WOODRUFF: Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum jumped on that remark.
RICK SANTORUM, (R) presidential candidate: The point is, why are we subsidizing?
Not that they can't go. They can go. They just have to borrow money, find other sources to be able to go. And why should they be given preferential treatment as an illegal in this country? That's what we're saying.
(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)
Well, what about the
accusations that Santorum didn't meet residency requirements for a Penn Hills online charter school for his kids, as the Santorums spent most of the year in Virginia not Pennsylvania? And this guy wants to attack Rick Perry for taxpayer-subsidized college education even for those undoc...or as Fox News prefers it "illegals" (even if those students'
PARENTS made the bad decision)? What a heartless, bigoted fool.
Oh, according to a recent
Right Wing Watch post "
Anti-Immigrant Activists Blast Perry Over DREAM Act Defense", Perry has opposed the federal DREAM Act as "amnesty" despite signing a state-level bill dealing with college tuition!
