But, I don't put it in *everything* I cook. Honestly, I've run into some folks that season all their dishes with garlic. Not necessary! And I've waited on garlic-hounds; oy, the stink is enough to make me pass out.

Not much garlic in their cooking, so I didn't get used to the smell. Heh. And they died of heart problems on my dad's side!

And more seriously, it's hardly a fair comparison. Never heard of second hand garlic odor cancer.
Edit to say, just reread your post and it said "not hiring". Okay, I agree that is wrong if it's about odor. Should be determined case by case for any foul odor. Not allowing smoking in the work place is fine imho.

31. Bought "seed" garlic bulbs last year (one plants in September |
|
in the North part of the country), from Fillaree Farms last year, (Territorial has organic also, and is advertised on DU) about 7 or 8 bulbs. Broke out the cloves planted them about 1" deep in my raised beds, about 6" apart, covered them with about 3-4" of straw for the winter. (Book called "Growing Great Garlic" has tips and some history, but you can find enough info on the web to do well). This let me get hardneck varieties. Stores mostly carry softnecks but these hardnecks seem tastier.
About June the garlic scapes appeared, cut those off and fried them, slightly garlicy/onion flaver.
Around the end of July and first part of August, after all but about 3-4 leaves had dried I harvested garlic bulbs. Probably wound up with 60 or so bulbs in total of the 3 varieties. Been taking that and other stuff from the garden to neighbors, took some to give to folks at the community garden, finding new recipes to try - such as sun pickles with little cukes from the market stand.
As if you can't tell, I really like my garlic, was a change from the carrots, tomatoes, onions, etc. Comparitively cheap entertainment, the garden. I recommend it highly.
Now I want a couple acres. At this rate I will need it for all my garlic in a couple years.

43. At the farmers markets it seems to be around $4/lb, usually 5-6 bulbs, |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 02:36 AM by jtuck004
a couple people sell it for $7. I think there may be a program to double what people get with their EBT card as well.
The mail order seed bulbs sell for 7.50 to 8.50 - per quarter lb., but you wind up with 4-8 bulbs for each one, and the next year you save some good ones and off you go. ;)
This could turn into more if one were to grow enough to turn into other products. I ran into "the garlic lady" at a fair, she has a whole line of garlic salts, dips, etc, most made with garlic from her farm or people she contracts with.
My take on what is happening to the economy makes me think I need to pursue an acreage and this is one crop, along with cabbage and carrots, etc, that can be used to create other products in a small commercial kitchen, get me into producing something again. Better way to make a living, I think.

40. There are ways to reduce the "offensive" garlic odor |
|
1: Eat a lot of parsley it gets rid of garlic breath for sure and might help with the sweat problem....
2: Lemon juice cuts down on the garlic odor as well, lemon laundry detergent helps with any garlic smell that might have gotten on your clothes.
3. If garlic gets on your hands lemon juice helps with that.
There are a lot of other tips about reducing garlic odor on the web, those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Anyway I love garlic I just don't eat it enough, wish I did there is a rumor garlic eating can also reduce a person's chances of getting cancer.

Had enough of kissing ashtrays. It always starts out fine but after a month or two the smoker gets lax and the smell alone is too much to take.
So it's now a deal breaker.

Most everyone I know in my biz does too.
If everyone ate garlic there wouldn't be some pissy midwesterner (like my mom) who only takes salt and pepper on their fried or boiled food to complain about 'garlic breath'.

A couple of things I never knew before...
Not everyone has asparagus pee odor, and not everyone can smell asparagus pee odor.
Asparagus is good, properly cooked. Not gray-green and mushy. Still green and crisp...that's how it's the best.
BTW, my pee smells from it and I can smell it. Like 20 minutes after eating the stuff.

to ward off colds and bronchitis.
Crush garlic clove, steep in hot water about 5 minutes, drink warm.
Make sure to keep stirring those little bits up and swallow them, not just the juice.
That's for prevention.
If I already have a cold, I do two cloves a day. That, and nasal rinsing, cuts a head cold down by at least two days, and it's not as severe.
