Patrons mistake ice cream shop mascot for KKK
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 09:53 PM by Tejas

Liza Diaz, who manages the store for Cantres and co-owner Jesus Diaz, said an employee at the bank where she does business told her a co-worker was so frightened by the white dollop patrolling the street corner that she called her husband crying and refused to drive through the intersection.

Here's a sentence I never thought I'd read:

http://www.ocala.com/article/20110926/ARTICLES/110929750

I'm sure it was wholly innocent, but boy, time to go back to the drawing board on that costume design there, people.

41. That is certainly possible. Though I doubt it
I think it has more to do with the culture of rumor and the idea of the KKK as a bogeyman.

When I was in elementary school, every once in a while a rumor would circulate among the African-American kids that after school that day, the KKK was going to kill any black child who was wearing x colored shirt or x brand of shoes. This was in Ohio in the 1980s.

From what I know, the Civil Rights era Klan was more or less broken decades ago through successful FBI infiltration and (I imagine) a natural process of decline as society moved forward. I think it hardly exists now and when they do surface, it's half a dozen guys at a time whose only purpose is to annoy the rest of society by marching through town. They are always vastly outnumbered by counter-protesters and police escorts. At this point they are pretty much a joke.

75. why not "frightened by the white mask with a pointy top"?
Instead, it's a "dollop". Great journalism there.

Maybe the klan should just start calling their hoods "dollops" too. Makes them seem like harmless tasty treats instead of vicious gun-packing racists.

I'm pretty sure African Americans wouldn't be in the KKK.

Just a guess.

And it looks nothing like a KKK uniform.

did not witness the kkk kidnap a family member to be lynched when they were younger? it was pretty common up until the 1960s. i read this story and imagine a woman my mother or grandmothers age freaking out crying thinking that the kkk is back to just posting people in town to make sure that the "niggers go home" and dont stay downtown too long and "give the town the wrong image". you read the article and think that the person just must be the stupid child of a stupid parent.....

39. that could be a wonderful thing
i would like to think that someone who went to school in Puerto Rico would be very informed on the history of Puerto Rico. I would like to think they would also be very well informed about the history of the other islands down there.

Lacking in mainland us history? OK

Could just be like when i was in school. All us history classes started with the explorers on thru the war of independence to maybe the civil war. Then the semester would be over. It was like nothing really important happened from maybe 1860 til present.
When i went to the university, i took European History instead of us history becasue if i had to study the Stamp act one more time i was going to vomit.

My kids grew up on a diet of documentaries, books and even some marches. They care because I care and because I show them what is happening. Now they watch more educational things then anything else, all on their own. Am I a great parent.... no, not really, but at least I know they are heading into the world with a curiosity about what is happening around them instead of being experts on the Family Guy.

53. As a parent of a high school student in California....
...I can tell you, as an undisputable fact, that the KKK is mentioned in only three of the paragraphs of her U.S. history text.

There's an entire chapter dedicated to racial injustice, Jim Crow laws, and segregation, but the book attributes these to institutional racism throughout the south. The Klan itself is only mentioned in a few paragraphs. The paragraphs are very clear in portraying them as extremist, murdering thugs, but there is still very little material on them.

When I was in college in the early 90's, my post-Civil War history class gave them much the same treatment. They were mentioned, but weren't exactly emphasized.

For kids and younger adults who grew up outside the south, and after the KKK ceased to be a political force, it's pretty easy forget that they existed at all.

52. Why are people mocking the patrons?
They may be confused, but folks seem to miss the point that they are upset about the possibility of the KKK being there, rather than cheering it. And, considering where this took place, it's a good sign. It's not horrendously far from where the Rosewood Massacre took place. They have come a long way, in the right direction, IMHO.
