Remember Remember the Fifth of November |
|
Idea:
Guy Fawkes masks for everyone @ Occupy Wall Street on Nov. 5th (assuming it lasts that long).
Anyone know how we can make this happen? I was thinking about some sort of crowd-sourced funding to buy thousands of masks. But have no experience with that kind of stuff. Anyone have ideas?

1. Masks are illegal in NY, you'd be guaranteeing arrest while benefiting a major corporation. |
|
NYC mask law discussed here: http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2011/09/anonymous_discrimination_weari.phpIt's not a good idea. Additionally, every sale of one of those masks benefits TIME WARNER. http://boingboing.net/2011/08/29/every-time-an-anonymous-protester-dons-a-guy-fawkes-mask-time-warner-goes-ka-ching.html Every time an Anonymous protester dons a Guy Fawkes mask, Time Warner goes "ka-ching"End result? You provide the police with a valid excuse to arrest any person wearing a mask, and you fill the coffers of the TIME WARNER corporation. Pretty much a lose-lose proposition.

of the final battle scene in movies like V for Vendetta / The Three Amigos / Born in East L.A. that if everyone is doing it, then it being illegal no longer really matters?

All masking does is make it easier for the NYPD to figure out who needs arresting.
You're never going to see that kind of critical mass down there.
If they wanted to make the same point while denying TIME WARNER their mask payday, they could use greaspaint--white, pink and black--and pretty much achieve the same effect while staying within the law.

10. Yup. they have to buy those masks from someplace... |
|
besides, the whole guy fawkes mask thing is old. A friend of mine, worked as a chaperon at a home coming dance recently, several of the kids there were wearing guy fawkes masks because they thought it "cool". They had no idea other than v for vendetta who guy fawkes was.
on top of that, they wore them on the backs of their heads not on their faces because, as one kid told my friend, "that's the style".
more money for timewarner. which goes directly against what the protesters are protesting.
besides, why wear an a mask that celebrates an english reactionary? we have plenty in our own history to celebrate. But that won't work, because there aren't any cool masks celebrating them.
everyone is a victim of marketing.

Hmmm, maybe some clever protesters could jinn up a few Founding Fathers tee shirts and wigs. If they can make a "tuxedo" tee, they can do the same for "colonial dress!" These could be sold with a few wigs--the Jefferson, the Washington, and the one w/the hole in the top for the follically challenged--the Franklin!

October in NYC, especially at night, is tough. Going to get worse as the rain starts kicking in.
Cold and rainy.

11. If you MUST wear these stupid masks... |
|
...get everyone together en masse and march in the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.
Bearing in mind that a representation of someone who advocates violence (either the real guy or the comic book character) go against everything I've read that the OCCUPYWALLST movement represents.
