'Racist' bake sale at UC draws angry protest
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

A face-off on the UC Berkeley campus Tuesday pitted Democrats versus Republicans, pro-affirmative-action students versus those favoring race-blind policies and, ultimately, cupcakes versus brownies.

None other than former UC Regent and affirmative-action opponent Ward Connerly showed up at Sproul Plaza to help campus Republicans sell frosted cupcakes priced according to the race of the buyer - a stunt intended to mock legislation before the governor that would allow universities to consider race and ethnicity in admissions decisions.

"The point is, the people of California have said we don't want to see race and color in admissions," Connerly told angry students and faculty who crowded around the table.

"Go to hell!" yelled Ann Callegari, an African American student. "Are you the overseer?"

1. College Republicans have been doing this shit
since the 90s. I don't know why people still bother getting worked up about it. When I was an undergrad, the kids who were members of Republican groups on campus were just a bunch of spoiled brats who liked complaining about how they were "oppressed" for their conservative views and giving other people shit.

2. Racist bake sale
So are they spoiled brats or do you think they have a point despite their tactics? in my own personal opinion which I try to base on logic treating one race different from another adds to the gap of our differences rather than our commonalities. Perhaps I am wrong but I'd like to hear a counter argument I welcome different points of view.

7. And they're point would be?
If it sounds, looks, and smells racists and misogynist, why it just might be racist and misogynist! So we're the ones who should bend over backwards for them, because they can't make themselves clear? College students who ought to know how to communicate by now? Not only any college students mind you. UC Berkeley college students.

You should learn to interpret racist remarks as, well, racist.

23. Point being
Their point from what I am reading seemed to be that while affirmative action necessary to help overcome inherit prejudice in people is not needed anymore. As treating people differently based on race or sex is unfair and racist. I guess the main question would be is it time affirmative action went away or is racistism till that rampant in this country? I do not presume to have enough experience to know the racism level across the whole country, but it raises an interesting question how long do we fight for affirmative action? At what point has the program run its course if ever? Maybe a compromise of leaving it up to the universities if they want to have a minority incentive program or whatever they want to call it. I would think most universities would opt in most are liberal it would be interesting to see the racial breakdown some years later. Thank you for your comments about the topic

10. Quotas
Most, if not all, colleges already have quotas with lowered admission standards for

*) above-average student athletes
*) legacies
*) children of rich repigs & other types of criminals who donate lotsa money
*) kids from rich white school districts with favored funding
*) children of repigs who threaten the college with lawsuits

12. Just a data point - It's true that many private colleges have special provisions as bongbong says,
But not the University of California.

16. Opposition should have a bake sale

Bake Sale Prices

Minority: $2
...

Good looks: $1

rich white kids, legacy white kids, children of large donors: $0.75

Physically talented but stupid athletes: $0.25

Subtract $0.25 for white males

28. Actually they recruit foreign students from all countries
And they also recruit from other States because they all pay tuition fees. California students used to not have to pay, but they do now, although not as much.

13. The point of the bake sale is draw attention to the admission and fees.

The young Republicans believe everyone should be treated equally.

Everyone else agrees with with them, but also recognize the fact that not everyone has been treated equally. If everyone should be treated equally, but not everyone has been treated equally, then what should we do?

Skewing college admission is one tactic. Disadvantaged ethnicities benefit greatly from education, just like everyone else. So if we help them go to college, then the long term effect will hopefully be increased overall equality.

Skewing college admission is a short term tactic with long term goals.

19. In the year 2011 affirmative action should be based on
economic need or conditions rather than race, but I'm sure that's a minority opinion here.

People with more money have more opprotunity. I also maybe in the minority on this topic but hard working people who are poor maximize the benefit of the program.

33. I agree with you 100%
Far too often, discussions about race are confused with economic conditions. It's shown that african-americans have a higher crime rate than whites, however, when you factor income into the equation, you realize that the numbers start to even out quite a bit.

22. and some races have had hundreds of years of oppression that
has kept them at the lowest level while privileged whites have prospered for generations. It will take several generations of equal opportunity to breed out the effects of racism.

So no they don't have a fucking point with their fucking idiotic cupcakes.

34. Level head
Thank you for your...interesting post. They have a point that they believe was made with the bake sale, you obviously do not agree with it. I understand it is an emotional topic, but blinding name calling hardly creates a good counter point. Each generation is different from the previous, and I see racism evident but most of what I see is not oppressive mainly just unjust assumptions and unfair judgements. Granted I do not presume to know the racist level of the country as I have not lived that many places to get a feel, but perhaps basing more on economic status makes more sense. Or perhaps we are more racist as a country that I have been privy to observe.

Take a guess where Grover Norquist, Jack Abramoff, and Ralph Reed became buddies, not to mention put Karl Rove in a leadership position.

Evidently the backlash scared them.

"What I have seen and heard in response to the Berkeley College Republicans' "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" has been far from healthy disagreement or challenging of ideas.

Instead, I have witnessed the harassment of the creators of the Facebook event, threats to those who plan on participating in the event, and a total mischaracterization of the purpose of the bake sale."

********

Mischaracterization? Yeah, they're so misunderstood.

35. I will continue to ridicule blacks who kowtow to white masters like slaves
I was one of the first to call "Justice" LongDong Thomas "Slappy", and will continue until his corrupt ass is off the bench. while a huge majority of African Americans and a lot of whites are trying to decouple blacks from the Step 'n Fetchit stereotype of the first half of the 20th century, people like Connerly should be ridiculed for their attempts to take us back to that time.

30. Repubs should not be allowed to use the phrase "the people" since the only people
they represent are corporations. The should have to say, "the corporate person-hood wants this or that."
