Why can't we do a full court press in favor of a woman's right to choose?
Why are we just playing defense and trying to ward off attacks on Planned Parenthood? Why aren't we taking it to every state that has de facto banned abortion through over-regulation of clinics, getting state legislation banning abortion overturned so that it is not lying there waiting for the day when a court case will set the conditions for a repeal?

I am tired of playing defense on the issue. The one good thing that I can see is changing contraception rules so that women can have insurance coverage.

1. Because we have to compromise between Wall St. and the Tea Party. Progressives aren't invited.

2. Women's reproductive freedom is restricted so that employers can discriminate
Edited on Wed Sep-28-11 07:30 PM by McCamy Taylor
based upon the fact that some of their female workers accidentally get pregnant and therefore none of them will get promotions because hey, they are not trustworthy. This keeps women in low paying, low prestige jobs where they make the bosses lots of money, while younger men get the promotions. Also, if women have young kids to support and really need the money, they will be better employees--and at the same time their bosses can justify not giving them raises or better jobs by saying "You miss too much work taking care of your kids." If there is no abortion, the mere fact that a woman might get pregnant can be used to keep her out of certain jobs which could be hazardous to a pregnancy-- even if she is not sexually active or uses birth control.

Women's reproductive freedom would enable them to rise out of the pink collar ghetto. And, as we all know from the 2008 election, sexism is one of the few -isms that is still widely accepted in this country.

3. I understand the rationale
but I don't understand why WE accept it. Why are NOW and other women's organizations not strong enough to make the change happen?

4. women don't want it enough
i have to admit i am disgusted with my "fellow" women, most of them didn't give one tiny fuck about the fact that we had (and so still have) NO equal rights under the constitution, as far as woman's right to choose, i am disgusted that most women i know are just hopeless and let fate choose, then they wonder why their lives are shit

roe vs. wade and the right to choose made it possible for ME to have a much better life than i could have otherwise have, and i spent many years being supportive of the local clinic, doctor, etc...but most women don't seem to care

it's discouraging, too many women figure that getting pregnant is an instant excuse for being a loser and they actually seem to like having that excuse

it is truly sad

those of us who benefited from and support freedom of choice are in the minority, most women (like most men) are no hopers with no clue

5. We ought to. They're sneaking horrendous things on this issue over the transom.

... while we try to deal the rest of the avalanche of attacks on organized labor, voting, Social Security, and more. But reproductive rights are no less important than any of these.

6. AS another poster pointed out, this is an issue of
economic exploitation. Like EVERYTHING is as long as the capitalist system is in place.

People might get tired of hearing it, but that doesn't change the basic truth of the fact of it. If you want to get rid of exploitation, get rid of capitalism and institute economic democracy.
