Over 100 NYPD Officers Refuse to Work in Support of Occupy Wall Street Movement
Source: OccupyWallStreet

September 27, 2011 - TAMPA, FL - In a bizarre twist of fate, a growing movement of New York City Police Department officers are banding together with the Occupy Wall Street movement, while the main stream media continues to relatively ignore this escalating event.

The Occupy Wall Street movement issued the following statement on their website:
"Today we received unconfirmed reports that over one hundred blue collar police refused to come into work in solidarity with our movement. These numbers will grow. We are the 99 percent. You will not silence us."

The news was released shortly after the identity of Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna was revealed after he allegedly pepper sprayed a deaf woman.

The report that the officers are staying home is from OccupyWallStreet. The use of the word Bizarre appears to be an addition from Gregg Prescott, M.S, whoever he is is.

79. I think Mr. Prescott made an error in his choice of vocabulary.

Which isn't at all uncommon these days. I think he means "ironic." It is ironic, isn't it?

And I don't think he's one of the other side and brainwashed, I think his vocabulary could be strengthened.

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly stated that the Internal Affairs Bureau will look into the decision of a high-ranking officer to use pepper spray on a number of female protesters this past Saturday at the Occupy Wall Street demonstration.

Over 100 NYPD Officers Refuse to Go To Work in Support of Occupy Wall Street Movement The Occupy Wall Street movement is growing and has expanded to cover other cities, such as Los Angeles, CA and Chicago, IL, with numerous protests scheduled for other cities, such as Sarasota, FL, Washington DC, Lexington, Kentucky and San Francisco, California.

Occupy Washington, D.C. begins on October 6, 2011.

116. Boston, Massachusetts as well
There is "talk", no coverage or any other means to confirm that there are protests in Boston's financial district. Just a series of detours and no explanations. Teamsters mentioned briefly that they support the occupy wall street movement, and the interview was abruptly terminated. Just after the Patriots game on sunday.

53. I doubt it ever will be
with 34,500 officers in totality, unless one or more of these officers steps up to confirm it, how would anyone ever know that they weren't just out sick. 1 in 345 officers refusing to show up is probably lower then their usual out sick rate.

And the spokesmen aren't going to confirm a think like that. the police higher ups are not on the side of this protest. City hall would like it to go away. I would imagine even most of the liberal oriented organizations and politicians who might have affinity with the cause are hesitant to be connected to something with so much potential for "going wrong", something so self directed and not under the power of a recognized authority.

It's just hard to believe, especially with no confirmation.

However, as others have pointed out, cops are working class too, just indoctrinated ones. If even a few raised their consciousness where they know that they ARE part of the working class, it WOULD split off some from the herd of protector robots. And help.

These "peace officers" did not sign up to injure and quell citizen revolts, siding with the wealthy against the other 99%. I wish that ALL of these policeman, who were sworn to "defend and protect" the citizens, would realize that they are only "defending and protecting" the criminals.

What a great sign. thank you.

Such is the nature of a "strike". By bringing down the available forces, more attention will be brought to this issue and maybe some resolution will happen. It just depends how brave and honest the media wants to be I guess.

Yes, police provide a valuable service, not just running speed traps. 100 less on the streets is bad because it stretches an already thin force. Would you have wanted 100 less officers on 911?

29. You could say the same damn thing about any group of striking workers
For example, if the 137 clerks that work in my building go on strike, upward of 40,000 people don't get their mail.

The 100 or so officers who are refusing to work at the protest are doing the right thing. Oh, by the way: invoking 9/11 is a purely Republican tactic that depends on the fears of the people it's being used on. We at DU are not that cowardly.

Try again.

74. I am a little too pragmatic for that
Many of the 10 demands are laudable. I believe that a Tobin Tax would put an end to speculation and the elimination of Glass-Steagall was one of the main drivers that put the US ecomony in the mess that it was in. Others are going to take a lot longer to address, if they ever will be addressed.

However, I cannot comport doubling down on shutting down the economy as a whole. The markets are tenuous, at best. A shutdown is the last thing we need right now.

85. Totally disagree with you because
Strikes are suppose to have an impact and the greater the impact the more effective the strike. Thus making it possible to come to a resolution quicker and easier.

Also, I find it rather curious you would choose to direct your attention against strikers instead of directing it against the management or politicians responsible for creating the intolerable conditions requiring a strike in the first place.

Strikers are not the problem when a strike happens. Those who are in power who created the circumstances requiring a strike are the ones responsible. n/t

90. Global climate change is preparing some BAD SURPRISES for you. NOTHING is too critical to fail.
Including the whole atmosphere of the planet, or the circulation of the oceans.

Fair portions of the country already live under the understanding that any utility, any system, may fail, and it's not predictable how long it will take to restore it.

For a hospital not to have backup power - INDEFINITE backup power - is inexcusable (but then I used to build UPS's, and so am probably biased). Everything else is optional. Really.

There is no NEED for an army of police when people protest peacefully in this country. And those 100 cops know it, as do most people.

and in the weeks before, one who would have paid attention to the warnings, the Daily Briefing that said 'Bin Laden Determined to Attack', and then on 9-11 perhaps we'd not have lost 23 NYPD officers in a single day. Since we are playing 9-11 'what ifs' that's what I'd like to have had.

I was wondering from day 1 why the cops were not on the other side of the line. Unions /working class/ underemployed/ unemployed / Wall Street office temps have much more in common with the protestors.

I did temp work on Wall Street (for 7 years) when I couldn't find a job after college. Most of those Wall Street buildings are packed with low wage temps who have no job security or benefits. And quite often its temps who do all the day to day operations who run things. Rarely did CEO's or high salary titles show up, maybe one or two days a year.

73. When I worked at a large bank, the CEO did fantastic work.

His biggest success was replacing all of our telecom equipment from Motorola.

And he did this while serving simultaneously as President of Motorola where his biggest accomplishment was landing the bank as a customer.

Yet, he *still* found time to become the #1 rated CEO golfer.

Truly amazing how he could juggle all that.

More direct to what you said, when Merril Lynch laid off a bunch of their low-paid staff, they sent them home in limos. The laid off staffers saw this as just rubbing salt into the wounds which Lynch did not understand at all. Of course, if the CEO of Lynch gets laid off he ends up with a golden parachute and a new job making even more money somewhere else. Maybe they believe that is the way life works for everyone. We have a columnist here in Chicago who -- noting how often he writes about the exact same person bankrupting business after business while getting multi-million salaries -- has a standing offer to bankrupt any business within a year for just $1 million. But they keep opting for the higher paid "experts" instead.

Disclaimer: he might have been President of the bank and CEO of Motorola. I don't recall which way it was. But the point of the story, that the game is rigged, doesn't depend on that technicality.

55. Not surprised at all.
It's not their job to harass demonstrators. It's their job to catch practicioners of unethical behavior.

At the end of the day, (most) cops are not twits.

60. Sounds great, but I seriously doubt that it's true
The Police are union. They're just going to take it upon themselves to strike personally without the support of that union?

It just sounds very far fetched, and there seem to be no media confirmations whatsoever.

101. They've lied twice
First, Browne said that it was justified. Then he said he was "shocked" to see it on a news report four days later and that was the only contact he had with the case.

He lied both times.

I don't ask repeated liars like Browne for more "information" because clearly, he can't provide it without causing it to be disinformation.

They don't have a unified message and look silly.
Besides, protests never accomplish anything.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Solidarity!

117. History of movement
I am wondering if this is the point in time, where years from now people will be saying this is where the "islamic spring" came to America. The movement seems to be growing despite the non coverage of the news...it may too big and too late for the news to twist it around when they are finally forced to cover it.
