I’m sure pearls were clutched over that last one. You read it right: I enjoy paying my taxes. Why? Because with my taxes, I buy civilization.

Taxes are payment due for services rendered to me by society. I enjoy being able to drive from one end of Ellis County to another without having to pay a toll or replace my shocks every month(after chasing some of the fires this past month north of Palmer, this is still something to work on). I enjoy knowing if my crazy neighbors start fighting again and shooting holes in the walls, there is a trained group of armed and armored professionals I can call to deal with it. I enjoy knowing those crazy neighbors can be tried and incarcerated by trained professionals if need be.

And yes, I enjoy knowing poor people can get indigent health care if need be. I wish everyone could get health care without going bankrupt, but that’s another column.

I fully expect to be called a socialist now. Well, alright. If believing that participation in modern, technological society should come with a price tag makes me a socialist, I’ll wear that with pride. I’m saddened that simply believing the government, which is no more than a group of citizens banding together to make decisions for the whole people, cannot do anything right.
