Durbin says Democrats don't currently have the votes for Obama's job bill..

ok.. I never DID expect this to pass ( at least right away).. What I DID aspect was that all democrats would vote for it to put maximum pressure on the republicans to show they are they ones preventing more jobs.. Now which democratic senators do you suppose would not vote for this bill??

Hmmm Landreu od LA?? Nelson of NE?? Who else??

4. Exactly who is ON the list?
Do we have an idea if this bill has any support whatsoever?

5. 30 seconds of research and I found it. It is about 60 votes and not about Democrats

8. I do not expect to overcome a filibuster...
Edited on Fri Sep-30-11 09:48 AM by samrock
... 1st step is to get a vote with ALL democrats voting aye to break the filibuster and all republicans voting no.. than use that vote for commercials in home states of the republicans.. We have to make the SOB's start to fear voting against jobs..

11. If success is predicated on 100% of 52 people voting the way you want, you are setting yourself up
for failure.

6. I just do not understand the political logic of a democrat voting no..
They must know that the bill has 0 chance of getting thru the house.. (at least not without major changes).. BUT the political effect of ALL democrats in the senate voting aye and all republicans voting nay on a jobs bill would be awesome.. Are they really afraid if they vote for the bill that T.V. commercials by there republican opponent in the next election.. saying " Don't vote for him.. he voted to waste your tax dollars " would work vs democrats commercials saying.. "Hey we promised to create jobs.. so did they.. look who is actually TRYING to.."??

7. They are not voting no. The issue is not Democratic votes. It is getting enough GOP votes to
overcome a filibuster.

9. From the article:
"The oil-producing state senators don't like eliminating or reducing the subsidy for oil companies," he said. "There are some senators who are up for election who say I'm never gonna vote for a tax increase while I'm up for election, even on the wealthiest people. So, we're not gonna have 100 percent Democratic senators. That's why it needs to be bi-partisan and I hope we can find some Republicans who will join us to make it happen."

According to Durbin, there are some Democratic defectors.

12. Even if we have 100%, we are 8 short of a filibuster proof majority. But...
harping on one or two defectors out of 52 and castigating "The Democrats" for that is intellectually dishonest.

13. I'm castigating no one.
While the Durbin stated there weren't the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, what is not clear is whether there are even 50 votes to pass the bill anyway. Based on Durbins comments, that doesn't seem to be the case.
