NBC - "Coming up, startling news about President Reagan...possible Alzheimers" |
|
Nothing startling about it to those who were paying attention.

GHW Bush was in power almost as long as FDR, if you count the Reagan years. I got the impression that he really wasn't working too hard to get re-elected in 1992; I think the man was weary from fucking up the country for the previous 12 years.

23. Yeah, I actually believed him when he kept saying he couldn't recall |
|
during the Iran/Contra hearings. I remember saying at the time, "fuck, I think he's telling the truth.".

6. I didn't pay nearly as much attention to politics back then as I do today, |
|
and I could tell way back in the mid-80's that the man was non compos mentis a lot of the time.

10. This was evident when Regan? was his chief of staff |

He said he was like the guy who carried a shovel and a bucket at the end of an elephant parade.

12. Startling? Really. I'm 34 years old and I knew |
|
then there was talk of him having Alzheimers during his time in office. I realize I was more interested in politics than most people at that age but come on.

15. I distinctly recall a long, rambling speech - |
|
during his 2nd term. It was about a drive up the CA coast and the speech was as windy as 101! My husband and I looked at each other at the time and said :wtf: ?
What kills me is what a "hero" he's become. What the hell does that say about what we want in our leaders??

19. That's a great run-down of Reagan's presidency. |
|
You should turn it into an OP. The Reagan Myth needs to be debunked as often as possible before it gets accepted as historical fact.
A few other things he is responsible for. The phony 'War on Drugs' and the 'Trickle down economics' which started the downfall of the U.S. economy leading to where we are today.
And, if I am not mistaken, didn't he turn in his fellow actors during the McCarthy era?
I can't think of much he did that benefited the American people. But he was great for the wealthy. The only problem I have with crediting him with all these things is that I don't believe he was sentient for a good part of his time in office. However, when he was, it was obvious he was mean-spirited, hateful person especially toward the poor, the mentally ill and especially the 'left' for whom he had a special hatred.
One good thing he managed to do, probably inadvertently, was to produce two decent kids. I will always wonder how that happened. How two, selfish, uncaring individuals could have produced those two very caring people. Maybe there is a God and that his own personal punishment. To be the father of two liberal minded, enlightened individuals.
Anyhow, great post, thanks for the history lesson.

22. Right. How many off us saw this 25+ years ago... |
|
Alzheimer's is a horrible thing to have happen, but Ronald Reagan should have been removed from office with the first signs.
His doctors knew it. Hell, I knew it.
I have to wonder who was really making the decisions those last few years. Cheney? Bush?

"What would America be without this great country of ours?" :wtf: The crowd cheered wildly, btw.

26. It was obvious to me at the time, |
|
But then again I had a grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer's and knew the signs.
Many others thought he was acting weird as time went on, but nothing was done.
Reagan was the perfect puppet president. He acted the part well, he gave great speech, and he couldn't remember a thing. That came in handy during the Iran Contra hearings.
