"Niggerhead."
Seriously.

This is the name of Rick Perry's hunting camp.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/rick-perry-familys-hunting-camp-still-known-to-many-by-old-racially-charged-name/2011/10/01/gIQAOhY5DL_story.html

Paint Creek, Tex. — In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.

“Niggerhead,” it read.

Ranchers who once grazed cattle on the 1,070-acre parcel on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River called it by that name well before Perry and his father, Ray, began hunting there in the early 1980s. There is no definitive account of when the rock first appeared on the property. In an earlier time, the name on the rock was often given to mountains and creeks and rock outcroppings across the country. Over the years, civil rights groups and government agencies have had some success changing those and other racially offensive names that dotted the nation’s maps.

But the name of this particular parcel did not change for years after it became associated with Rick Perry, first as a private citizen, then as a state official and finally as Texas governor. Some locals still call it that. As recently as this summer, the slablike rock — lying flat, the name still faintly visible beneath a coat of white paint — remained by the gated entrance to the camp.

Virtually the only thing that would surprise me from the Republican presidential field is if they all got up and said "We are horrible human beings, and we want to throw people we don't like into concentration camps." And the thing that would surprise me the most is that they admitted it.

7. Well, he gives a few long-winded explanations about how he painted over the rock,
but it doesn't really matter. What's buggy is that his explanations don't match the recollections of others:

“I remember the first time I went through that pasture and saw that,” said Ronnie Brooks, a retired game warden who began working in the region in 1981 and who said he guided three or four turkey shoots for Rick Perry when Perry was a state legislator between 1985 and 1990. “. . . It kind of offended me, truthfully.”

It doesn't even matter that he didn't name the place. He left the sign up for eons. And it wasn't tiny--it was huge:

The rock was about five feet across and three feet tall, smooth and relatively flat, the word in block letters stretching across its surface, said the former worker from the Hendrick ranch, who said he had seen the rock numerous times over the past 30 years.

“I was just so taken aback that it was so blatant, so in your face,” said a person from the Dallas area who visited the camp once in 1990 or 1991 and did not want to be named in a story potentially critical of Perry. “It was just, ‘whop.’ It was a big rock, big enough to write that whole thing out.”

Who the hell would want to lease a place with that name? The first person to find an old picture of Perry posing in front of the sign will probably make a nice payday....

25. It was also a common name for coral outcropings on the outer reefs of the keys way back when.
If you did a lot of night reef fishing down in the Keys (a somewhat dangerous but very productive sort of fishing) back 40 or so years ago the word would have been familiar to you. It is the name given to coral outcrops quite a way off shore that might be exposed at low tide. They will rip the bottom right out of a boat if they are hit, but they harbor lots of fish.

construction it was very common ....... also linked to the fact that if you were in a fight w/ an African American the
urban legend was that blacks had harder heads then whites.

I'm pretty good at internet searches and have been unable to find an image.

31. Wow - somebody please explain how this makes Perry racist...
“When my Dad joined the lease in 1983, he took the first opportunity he had to paint over the offensive word on the rock during the 4th of July holiday,” Perry said in his initial response. “It is my understanding that the rock was eventually turned over to further obscure what was originally written on it.”

Perry said that he was not with his father when he painted over the name but that he “agreed with” the decision.

In response to follow-up questions, Perry gave a more detailed account.

“My mother and father went to the lease and painted the rock in either 1983 or 1984,” Perry wrote. “This occurred after I paid a visit to the property with a friend and saw the rock with the offensive word. After my visit I called my folks and mentioned it to them, and they painted it over during their next visit.”

33. Here's the thing: It's gonna be many decades before the Republicans shake their embrace of racism.
Cain's recent speechifying, and a tale about the painting of a rock is hardly even a start.

In addition, many people find Perry a deeply disingenuous character due to his career as politician.

Unfair, mayhaps...but Perry will have his money, power, and connections to dry his tears.

Don't cry for him Argentina, stiff upper lip, wot, wot?

"Perry’s version of events differs in many respects from the recollections of seven people, interviewed by The Washington Post, who spoke in detail of their memories of seeing the rock with the name at various points during the years that Perry was associated with the property through his father, partners or his signature on a lease."

Perry's version of events even appears to differ from his own version of events, as the quotes you've included demonstrate.

32. I'm sure he searched out property with a racist name to purchase -
- This is really stretching it a bit. It was called that long before he had anything to do with the property and its obvious that someone tried to remove the name on the rock by painting over it.

Give him marks for bad maintenance as the paint is fading and the name is "still faintly visible" but - other than that - this is an embarrassing stretch. There's plenty of things to go after Perry for but this isn't one of them.

111. Eye witnesses say that the name was not whitewashed out until recently.
That's why it is still visible. This is a whitewash in more ways than one, and a sloppy one.

Why is this important? Think about what it means for somebody who is a leading candidate for president to have grown up and lived in a family and community that thought this was ok.

A word that most living people in the U.S. recognize as absolutely taboo was the source of a huge joke for decades that Rick Perry lived and played under.

35. Seriously, what's the problem? An offensive name, definitely.
But we now know for sure that this person is not in any remote way fit to hold any sort of public office. Even the folks at Stormfront rarely use the "n" word, at least in print.

Thank God he's mostly Texas problem. I hope this issue helps to speed him into the obscurity he so richly deserves.

40. THis will have little if any significance for the Republicans. They long for the days
of the 50's and 60's when people of color new their place. The good old days. All of this hullabaloo over a painted sign ( that will be their take)

And then he will just wink at the crowds like Bush used to do and tell them that he "had no idea what was written on that lil' rock, y'all" but the wink will tell them all that he did.

Cain: Perry insensitive over name of hunting camp
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain on Sunday criticized rival Rick Perry as being insensitive for not acting sooner in removing the racially offensive name from a rock outside the Texas hunting camp his family once leased.

Perry's campaign countered that Perry's father painted over the rock to cover the name, Niggerhead, soon after he began leasing the site in the early 1980s. While the Texas governor later joined the lease, neither he nor his family ever controlled, owned or managed the property, the campaign said in a statement.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the origins of the name were unclear and there was no definitive account for when and how the name first appeared on a large, flat rock at the gated entrance to the Throckmorton County property. In recent photos the word is mostly obscured by white paint, the Post reported.

107. I remember as a child that we ate a nut
that we called nigger toe. It was a dark, hard nut that was difficult to crack. This is now an embarrassment, that we could so freely call it that. Living in the rural Northwest, I had not even seen a person of color, as we didn't have TV in those days. I apologize to all.
