Rick Perry paints over the sign "n*****head" at his families hunting camp
Edited on Sun Oct-02-11 01:33 PM by Liberal_in_LA
Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain waded into a new controversy involving rival Rick Perry, saying it was “very insensitive” to have a racially offensive term painted in stone at the entrance to a hunting camp the Texas governor and his family had leased in West Texas.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the word “Niggerhead” was painted in block letters in rock at the gated entrance to the ranch, but that the rock was now painted over and lying flat.

Cain, appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” told moderator Chris Wallace that “that’s just very insensitive.”

There " isn’t a more vile, negative word than the ‘N word’ and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted over it, it’s just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country,” he said.

Cain, appearing on ABC’s “This Week with Christiane Amanpour,” repeated the entire name rather than couch it in a euphemism. “There are some words that do not basically inspire the kind of negativity like that particular word,” he said. “And since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place. It's just basically a case of insensitivity.”

4. The Post article proves Perry is lying about it
Perry claims his family painted over it in the early 1980's shortly after they bought the property.
But the Post found numerous people who saw it there through the 80's and some as late as the 90's,
most wondering if this wouldn't embarrass him one day.

6. Refused to let that word be spoken in my home
Edited on Sun Oct-02-11 02:34 PM by libodem
Along with the c word. The basic meaning is saying another race is less human than another. So ignorant and wrong. That being said taking the sting out of harsh words by becoming immune to the hurt is one of the ways assertiveness training works. Young black guys figured this out by calling each other the b-word, until it means nothing to them but a name. I think going postal over semantics shows some folks indulge on feeling offended.

7. I had to ask two AA co workers to NOT use that word
I was walking down the hall as they were talking and overheard one of them use it, I asked both of them to NOT use it. They looked at me and laughed, trying to justify using it. One told me that it was OK because they were both AA. I told them that I didn't care, that it was offensive. They further tried to make me think it was OK by telling me that it's "even a word in the dictionary".
Had to tell them "look, even if YOU TWO are OK using it, obviously you were saying it LOUD enough for passerbys to hear it...what if I had been a patient or a family member walking by..how would you explain to your supervisors if the patient/family had complained?". They were pretty much implying that I shouldn't care because I was white so it shouldn't offend me. Um, ok...my family is pretty diverse, I have an AA nephew, American Indian niece and nephew. But even if I didn't, I told them it was still offensive!

9. it is important to talk about it
It's an ugly and offensive term even when AA use it casually and in fun. I think we have white liberal guilt about the treatment of people of color by our ancestors. The word makes me sick.

8. Unfortunately, my son uses the N word.
He was born Miami, FL, and went to live with his father, my ex-husband, in Mississippi, when he was 12 years old. He lived in Mississippi and Alabama and then Georgia, when I moved to Atlanta in 1989. He is a redneck. But he voted for Obama, so he is not a total bigot. But he still uses the N word, and, of course, I jump all over him when he does.

13. Actually, it's quite shocking
They didn't try to blame "some librul" claiming "they did it to make the GOP look bad"

Isn't that the standard excuse?
