USA today column: "Southern Baptist Convention, change that name"
"A week ago, Southern Baptist Convention President Bryant Wright told his organization's executive committee in Nashville that he had appointed a task force to study a possible name change. Abandoning the 166-year-old identifier, he argued, would help the group thrive both in America and internationally.....

Wright is, well, right. The label is no longer accurate. Until the mid-20th century, the denomination was concentrated almost exclusively in the American South and Southwest. That is no longer the case. While most congregations still exist below the Mason-Dixon line, SBC churches — all 40,000 of them, as well as 16 million members — have spread to all 50 states, and the SBC's missionary effort has planted thousands more globally. The denomination also comprises more than a quarter of all American evangelicals."

Shall we help the Southern Baptist Convention come up with some?

How about:
"Hypocrits United"
"We hate your sin, why can't you tolerate ours?"
"6,000 years of experience can't be wrong!"

1. How about "Racist Baptist Convention"?

Its accurate as to their agenda and core principles at the founding of the organization, but its not specifically tied to a region.

9. or how about "Bigotry Baptist"
It references the racist history you point out as well as including their anti-gay bigotry--and it has a nice alliterative ring :)

7. It's the rare woman these days

who will agree to the SBC's "Submit to yer may-un, Barefoot-and-silent-and-pregnant-in-the-kitchen-makin'-biscuits" clause in their membership pledge.

After they apologized for their past racism, they turned around and decided it was still okay to demean, dismiss and marginalize women.

Sexist Baptist Convention would be accurate, if they want to be honest about what they believe.

10. To save money on bath towels, retain the SBC acronym
It can just stand for something else like:

Science Beliefs Circumscribed
Specially Benighted Churchgoers
Sheep Babbling Circle
Some Believe Crap
Seriously Bamboozled Congregants
Small Brained Chuckleheads

19. Why should you always take two Baptists fishing with you, and never just one?
I you only invite one Baptist to go along fishing, he'll quickly drink all the beer, and then make you buy some more.

If you take two, they'll both keep an eye on each other, leaving you to enjoy all the beer to yourself.
