Edited on Mon Oct-03-11 02:58 PM by FourScore
She is found guilty of defamation against Lumumba. She must pay damages and serve 3 years, which she has already served.

47. The death of Meredith Kircher is a terrible tragedy.
But the false conviction of 2 young, innocent people because of an over-zealous and criminal prosecutor (let's not forget he is sitting in jail now) is also a tragedy.

The real murderer is sitting in jail with only a 16 year sentence. That is another travesty. He should be in alot longer than that.

At least one of these many wrongs has been rectified.

I do hope the Kircher family will someday find the peace they need, and the courage to look at the evidence that has exonerated Amanda and Raffaele.

78. I remember that. It was one time. It looked bad. But remember how young they were...
and they explained later what each had said to the other. It was a rare moment where something was said to make things hopefully look not so bleak, as I recall.

They were kids. It was only a couple of minutes. I figured that played a large part in the guilty verdict, even though it has nothing to do with the murder or any evidence. Her "character" was also put on trial. I guess that's allowed in Italy. As if "character" had anything to do with the murder. Seriously, her sex life and general character was an element to be considered.

I'm not sure how well she knew her roommate. But I did read a statement made by her or her sister about the decedent, about how Knox didn't have time really to grieve for her roommate for a long time after the murder because of the all the events going on, the suspicion, interrogations, crucifying her in the press, etc. She was very young. I can't image that she could've dealt with anything like that on any sort of normal level.

If she were guilty, for one thing, and she didn't have a mental condition like being a sociopath, she would've feigned caring for the decedent, and she wouldn't have smiled at all. But she was a young person dealing with an extraordinary set of events, and she was in deep trouble very early on. I would be surprised if she hadn't screwed up and done something not "press appropriate."

That mother in Australia years ago who was convicted for killing her baby....Meryl Streep played her in a docudrama movie...her baby, she said, had been stolen by a dingo on a camping trip. She was partly convicted because she didn't act "appropriately sad and grieving like a mother should" after the baby disappeared. She was released from prison years later, when hikers found her baby's clothing in a dingo den out in nowhere, by pure chance.

How someone acts after a crime isn't evidence of guilty, unless they run. Knox didn't run.

34. Uh? Maybe we believe that all political opinion should be allowed
in a democracy? There are hundreds of parties in our parliament, some of which are the progeny of the former Fascist party (which, by the way, is outlawed by the 1948 Italian Constitution). Other than that, I - a proud liberal and Italian citizen - have no problem to allow differing opinions and voices in a parliament.

Not sure, however, what this has to do with this case. I am not convinced - based on reading the evidence from sources including Italian and British papers (the U.S. papers unfortunately have a very strong bias pro-Amanda) - that she is totally innocent. I also think OJ did it and that Casey Anthony killed her daughter. But of course, the jury and the judges have decided and the system worked on appeal.

67. There is a pattern on DU..
News coverage about women who are not politicians is

routinely dismissed by the men here as "uninteresting"

or unworthy of more than five minutes coverage....Usually

they complain about continuing reports of "Missing white girls"

as not being "real news". Although I don't, in the above case,

dispute the racial disparity in reporting such cases,

I really doubt they'd be any more interested if it were women of color.

There's PLENTY of "non-news" news about men -- sports figures for instance -- and

I don't see any beefs about that here..

Don't believe me? Check out the profiles on this thread and

see if it's not the identified MALES who are bitching about their "boredom".

What justifies the "accusation" I made is the fact that

The fact of the matter is that there is absolutely no gender based implication in either of those two posts. None.

Your evasion is quite telling. Can you show some evidence from either post that wouldn't apply to the story had it been about a man? You can't.

Will you please just retract your totally unsupported accusation so we can move on?

82. Okay, lets try this one more time before I conclude that you just simply fail at thinking
I read the post. In fact, lets read it again together because you are seeing something that is simply NOT there.

I cannot stand to go more than 3 seconds without knowing new things about Amanda Knox

I must devour anything and everything Amanda Knox to feel like a normal consumer and member of society. What color is her toe jam? Must have more of the Amanda Knox product. More product. More. More. More!

You assert that what indicates that I was being sexist about this is because I agreed with a poster who, presumably, was being sexist.

In order for this accusation to have merit YOU have the responsibility to show how the post I agreed with was sexist.

Now, please tell me what in the post wouldn't still apply had all this involved an Adam Knox?

Once you can do that, then you can throw around an accusation of sexism.

There's plenty of real sexism on DU and elsewhere. People like you crying fucking wolf so you can try and win a discussion isn't helpful.

Please retract your accusation.

83. What makes you think I give a rat's ass about what you "conclude"?
Although I'll admit you've evolved since you're now using "please"

84. As I suspected.
You can point to absolutely no evidence of sexism.

We're done.

71. Yeah. Like that old guy who was released from rape charges. There
was much rejoicing over that.

And posts about the women being raped, beaten up, and murdered in the revolutions in teh Middle EAst. Very few acknowledgements about that (they didn't want the revolutionaries' reputations besmirched, I guess).

I have noticed this pattern.

58. An overturned murder conviction of an American in a foreign prison is legitimate news.
and hardly "product".

Get over yourself.:eyes:
