Oral Sex May Cause Virus-Linked Cancer: Study

(Bloomberg) More males may get throat cancer from having oral sex with women than from smoking as the result of a virus linked to the malignancy, a study suggests.

Researchers examined 271 throat-tumor samples collected over 20 years ending in 2004 and found that the percentage of oral cancer linked to the human papillomavirus, or HPV, surged to 72 percent from about 16 percent, according to a report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. By 2020, the virus-linked throat tumors -- which mostly affected men -- will become more common than HPV-caused cervical cancer, the report found.

HPV is known for infecting genitals. The finding that it can spread to the throat and cause cancer may increase pressure on Merck & Co., the second-largest U.S. drugmaker, to conduct large-scale trials to see if its vaccine Gardasil, which wards off cervical cancer in women, also prevents HPV throat infections, said Maura Gillison, an oncologist at Ohio State University and study senior author.

“The burden of cancer caused by HPV is going to shift from women to men in this decade,” Gillison said in a telephone interview. “What we believe is happening is that the number of sexual partners and exposure to HPV has risen over that same time period.” ...........(more)

8. It sounds like they're actually trying to get the vaccine for men over the throat cancer issue.
But I see what you're saying.

20. Yes, it works for males. But it's going to be the same story,
Getting the vaccine before becoming sexually active.

From the sound of our Randy lot here, it would be too late.

21. Ain't skeered!
Or, as my friend, Willie the Shake sez:

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead...."

Death by cunnilingus is better than most I can think of.

40 years on and I still get a nice card on my birthday from the friend who showed me the world.

Sometimes, life is worth the risk.

Will Scope kill it? I'm probably fucked, if not.

After being diagnosed and treated for HPV cancer, I was told to avoid alcohol and alcohol-based mouthwashes.

24. Ths Group Is Way Too Fast For Me
Every smart-aleck comment has already been posted, I see. I'm reminded of the joke about the country church where one of the sopranos slipped from the choir loft and was hanging over the congregation. The preacher warned that anyone who looked up at her would be stricken blind. One old farmer squinted and said, "I'll risk one eye."

34. I was diagnosed with HPV head and neck cancer 8 months ago. This is a real problem.
It doesn't really matter how you get it. Once you ave it, your life changes big time.

HPV vaccines should be mandatory for all pre- teens.

46. Even if that weren't the case, it would still be worth it to get
boys vaccinated, if for no other reason than to prevent them from passing the virus on to girls that weren't or couldn't be vaccinated.
